Do you sell doors?
We manufacture and retail the Doorlite Kit™, a product that adds windows to any door. Our Authorized Dealer-Installers can help you locally source the right door for our products. They can even provide a full-service installation solution by creating a new or replacing an old entry system.
Can I use my current door?
Any flush door will do. Please note that older wood doors may have weatherized or warped over the years and may not be square or measure exactly 1-3/4 inches (exterior) or 1-3/8 inches (interior) thick. Our doorlites may or may not withstand this variation.
What if I can't use my existing door?
If your current door is in poor shape (or measures less than 1-3/4 inches for exterior or 1-3/8 inches for interior), you will need to purchase a flush wood, metal or fiberglass door (hollow or solid, either will work). Most big box hardware stores carry flush wood veneer, fiberglass and metal doors. If they don't carry any in stock, they can special order them for you.
How much will a new door cost?
You can expect to pay somewhere between $100-400 for an exterior door depending on the quality and core (if you prefer wood to fiberglass, we suggest asking for a solid wood "stave" core), and often less than $60 for an interior door. If you want to do it up right, you want an architectural grade wood door. These can be special ordered through your local builder's supply or lumber mill. If you want to go green, salvage an used flush door at your local Habitat Re-Store, builder's resale, or Craigslist.

The big box store has some particle core flush wood doors for sale. Can I use these in an exterior application?
Yes. While hollow core or particle core doors aren't the best, we have had customers report using them with positive results (i.e. buyer beware).
Can I use a wood Doorlite on a flush fiberglass door?
Yep. You might notice that some fiberglass doors run slightly smaller than the standard 1-3/4" thickness of most exterior doors; we have improved the tolerance of our Doorlites to withstand this variation. We do recommend priming or sealing all sides of the wood frame prior to installation.
Can I use a wood Doorlite on a flush hollow metal door?
Yes, and please use proper safety precautions when cutting the metal.
The big box store has some interior flush wood doors for sale. Can I use these?
Our Exterior Doorlite Kits are intended for exterior flush doors that are 1-3/4 inches thick. Our Interior Doorlite Kits are made for interior doors that are 1-3/8 inches thick.
Can I use Crestview Doorlites on a stile-and-rail or panel door?
Our door lites will fit on doors that are 1-3/4 inches thick (exterior lites only) or 1-3/8 inches thick (interior lites only). Depending on the construction of the stiles and rails, you may be able to remove the panels and apply our doorglass in their place. Contact us to custom order lites to replace the panels. We will need the exact dimensions of the hole you plan to cut in the door. Keep in mind, removing the panels on a stile-and-rail door may affect the strength of its construction.
What's better, a wood, metal or fiberglass door?
There are pros and cons to each. Metal doors are often highly economical, but they may dent or scratch easily. Fiberglass doors are more energy-efficient than wood doors, but wood veneer doors are definitely the most visually pleasing. We recommend that ANY exterior door is thoroughly sealed on all six sides (top, bottom, front, back, hinge and strike sides) prior to installation and is protected from sun and rain by a minimum 3ft overhang. We recommend against painting any exterior door a dark color if it is going to get a lot of direct sunlight.
I plan to stain the new door. Which wood veneer will match the wood of your doorlite frames?
We recommend birch as a versatile veneer that is easy to spec in most regions of the United States. We've also had excellent success with maple, ash and oak.
Are Crestview Doorlites ENERGY STAR compliant?
Yes, our doorglass can be used in door systems that meet ENERGY STAR and Green Building criteria and may qualify for certain tax rebates. In 2009, purchasing a new, ENERGY STAR-rated exterior door for an existing home can earn a tax credit of 30% of the cost, up to $1500. Our Doorlites and Doorlite Kits are a part of the door system that allows the homeowner to meet the tax credit. In order to take the credit, homeowners must have a Manufacturer's Certification Statement from the manufacturer that used the Crestview product to manufacture the door system. If you plan to try to take the credit or if you think your client may want to take this credit, print and keep all receipts for the door system. Print a manufacturer’s certificate for your records (this does not need to be submitted to the IRS but must be kept on hand for auditing purposes). Use IRS form 5695, which should be available early 2010. Remember: this is a tax credit, not a rebate.
