Born over two decades ago in a strange era of 1988 in a hospital in sunny Southern California. I grew up with access to the computer but it didn’t become a part part of my life until late middle school and early highschool. When I was about five I used to play on my dad’s Macintosh where he did design work for companies in an outdoor office we had in our Garden Grove house (which was awesomely located behind a Buddhist template). I don’t remember the exact paint program but everything was very simple, I remember working with the paint brush and only being able to draw pixelated objects, apply halftone pixelated patterns and whenever the application started I remember the painting “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” showing up. That isn’t when I became interested though, that was merely me being bored at 5 years old and wanting to do something to waste time (along with that I played Aladdin, some stick figure game, and attempted Myst which failed).
As I grew up (I think when I was around eight) I had played with Art Dabbler, it was an odd program that you could just play with textures, patterns and stuff. It also had a neat playback function so I spent quite some time doing that and just watching some of the preset playback illustrations work.
I think when I was about 12 things got slightly more serious. I enjoyed working on Appleworks that was available on the family’s iMac, I learned the brushes/text and stuff and even made my 8th grade poetry book out of using the application (I still have that book). After that I begged my parents to get me a Hot Wheels PC for my room (which was a really exciting point in my life because I grew up only using Mac and heard that PC was popular). The change was really big, and I mostly played The Sims and Mavis Beacon teaches typing. The specifications on the computer actually sucked but I was able to get a lot of neat Maxis games like Sim City, SimIsle, SimFarm, SimEarth, Streets of Sim City, Sim Copter (which I couldn’t actually use). To this date I still respect the Maxis company and hope they continue to prosper.
