El proceso de dibujar una flecha

Excellent post in Spanish on the trials and tribulations of a “simple” arrow

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off OST

Many, many things have been said about this film – none of which I’m going to try and emulate or even beat (perhaps another time), however one area that’s not touched upon that often is that of the awesome soundtrack to the film.

Indeed, Ferris Bueller soundtrack is a true 80’s classic and one that bring a ton of memories.

Mobile Blogging on iOS

Until recently blogging with your iPhone or iPad and even your iPod Touch was cumbersome and limited. Sure there is a native iOS application for Wordpress and a few 3rd party apps all claiming to give the users the best experience, but the truth is actually quite different. The aforementioned methods of blogging work quite well if you’re a beginner but once you cross that line from newbie to a bit more advanced, then you’ll to want have more control over your setup.

What Setup

Well, for starters the post-slug which is what Wordpress will output as part of your post url which sometimes can be long, longer, quite boring and not really tell the lector anything useful about your post. For example, myself and many others prominent tech bloggers [1. I’m far from prominent but I do like contributing] publish the infamous “link list post” popularized and brought to fame by Mr. Four million page views a month Godfather Gruber and other notable good fellows such as Ben “Suspender” Brooks, Shawn “Karate” Blanc, Dave “Red Sox” Caolo and Justin “Leica” Blanton. [2. all in good humor if you guys are reading, I enjoy all your sites tremendously, my hat goes off to you guys. You guys are top class nerds and that’s a compliment you can take to the bank :) ] Until recently “mobile blogging” from your iOS device mainly the iPhone and geeking out was almost impossible. One could not control the post-slug and one certainly did not have access to custom fields which provide a level of geekery which is really top notch.

Elements of a Blog Post

The elements of a blog post are usually the:

  • Title
  • Category & Tags
  • Body
  • Post Slugs
  • Custom Field access

The latter two for more advanced users, yeah you reading - nerds. Well the first three from that list are handled perfectly by the native Wordpress iOS app and a few 3rd party applications so I won’t dwell any further on those. The last two is where the magic happens. Recently, Justin Blanton from HyperText.net modified an older plugin called Slugger+. For those not familiar, its a wordpress plugin that gave you access to the post slug back when the popular Marsedit blogging application did not give you access to this field. Slugger+ gave you access via a shortcode [slug] [/slug] to modify the post slug to whatever you wanted ie. something something useful hopefully. Let’s a time out for a moment and define in non techie talk what a shortcode is in terms of Wordpress. A shortcode is nothing more than a command name which can often be modified based on the plugin instructions via the use of a word or phrase in cased in brackets ie. [slug] [/slug] whereby you would place the slug in between the two brackets above. Let’s hypothetically say I’m writing a post titled “ How to setup a Mac with Dropbox and WriteRoom”. Its a pretty lengthy post title wouldn’t you say and it would make for a lengthy post slug as well check it out. how-to-setup-a-mac-with-dropbox-and-writeroom But thanks to the geniuses at Wordpress this blogging platform supports a customizing the post slug which we can aptly customize to something like this: dropbox-writeroom-mac-setup Much better ah. Well, that’s exactly what you can do with Justin Blanton’s Slugger+ plugin not only on the Mac but now also on iOS hardware. Simply encase your post slug within the shortcode and place that in the body of the post and Wordpress will automatically interpret this command and replace you post slug with whatever you choose. Pure genius if you ask me. Example [slug]dropbox-writeroom-mac-setup[/slug]

The nerdery does not stop here

That’s right, Justin Blanton stepped up again a few days later and modified Slugger+ and renamed it CF Setter which gives you access to custom fields. I remember above I mentioned the “linked list posts” well those posts which actually link out to another source in this case the actual linked post url use the custom field “linked_list_url” which is what my Linked List Plugin from Jonathan Penn uses, similar plugins will have a similar names as well but for our purpose here today we’ll focus on the custom field titled “linked_list_url”. This field is actually readily accessible via the regular Wordpress admin post composition panel and even apps like Marsedit [5. I’m sure other apps as well] support it as well but nothing on the mobile side, let me rephrase on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, ever did before until CF Setter.

CF Setter liberates your iOS device

Following the same concept of Slugger+, CF Setter uses a shortcode, in this case, whereby you would place whatever information you’d want to direct to a specific custom field, in this case its the directive that echos the linked_list_url which off course is a “url” in the form of etc etc or even a shortened bit.ly or any url for that matter. So now while being away from the desktop and out and about you can compose a linked list post via your iOS device of choice. And that folks is pretty nerdy but also ever so sweet. So what are you waiting for, grab these two plugins here and here, set them up, and begin your mobile blogging extravaganza.

What apps do I use

Writing those shortcodes can be quite tedious but thanks to TextExpander for iPhone writing those shortcodes are only a few characters away. Its really too bad that the Wordpress iOS app does not have TextExpander support and hopefully they will soon but until then, there are many capable text editors for the iphone that do support TE. Some of those popular iOS applications ones include:

  • WriteRoom
  • PlainText
  • Simple Note App
  • Nebulous Notes
  • Elements

I actually own all of them but my true love is PlainText and Simple Note App. Besides the text editor you’ll need the Wordpress iOS app or other capable 3rd party alternative, a great RSS reader - I use Reeder, and off course mobile Safari, but you can do without Safari, most capable iOS RSS readers allow you to copy the link without visiting the actual site.

Conclusion

So there you have it ladies and gents, mobile blogging the iOS way and having it your way.

Nokia to launch dual-core smartphones, new Symbian UI in 2011

Great news indeed, guess I’ll be waiting for 2012 to revisit Nokia.

Nokia apparently has some big things in store for the Symbian OS in 2010. The somewhat stale UI will be a primary focus, which is of course great news for Symbian users. Of course we’ve known that the Symbian UI would be overhauled in 2011 for quite some time now — Symbian^3 was intended to be a major behind-the-scenes update, while Symbian^4 and S^5 would address more user-facing issues.

Nokia Ovi Store rocks 3 million daily downloads

Pretty nice update on the Ovi Store

I was quite the hater of the Ovi Store back when it launched in May 2009 because it did not live up to its promise and had some major issues. As you know, my thoughts about it have been changing as it continued to improve and develop and I actually enjoy it on my N8 and have been using it for 99% of the apps I install on my N8.
