ILAB’s youngest fan

... lives in Germany. Eight year old Gloria drew this picture while her father was browsing the ILAB site. It lies in the family: Her father is ILAB bookseller Götz Kocher-Benzing, her grandfather was former ILAB President and long-time Secretary of the ILAB Breslauer Prize for Bibliography Dr. Frieder Kocher-Benzing. Gloria, we hope to meet you at one of the future ILAB Congresses and Book Fairs!

Rare Booksellers' Firsts - A Cover Story

Booksellers’ firsts are as rare as some rare books. Often printed and produced with much love and energy, yet on cheap paper and for a still small company of customers, they are “used” – and thrown away. Part 2 of ILAB's cover story reflects the history of the trade in Europe since the late 19th century with first catalogues by Heribert Tenschert, A., B. and H. Rosenthal, E.P. Goldschmidt, Manfred Nosbüsch, ILAB Past President Michael Steinbach, and many others.

  • Madame Guillotine

    spacer

During the Reign of Terror, large-scale public executions were conducted, including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, executed in 1793. Thousands were sentenced to the guillotine by the Revolutionary Tribunal, often on little or no grounds - mere suspicion  of "crimes against liberty" was reason enough.  Death estimates range from 16,000 to 40,000 during this time.  The executions were popular entertainment and attracted huge numbers of spectators. A group of female citizens, the tricoteuses ("knitters"), became regulars, functioning as macabre cheerleaders as they watched while knitting.  The man most associated with the Terror was Maximilien Robespierre, and as the appetite for executions waned, he was arrested and executed in the manner of those he condemned - by Madame Guillotine.

Here’s something that has hung on the wall of every office I’ve had for the past five years (that four offices, in case you’re counting). It’s a single sheet; text and image on one side, text alone on the other. I have two more much like it. But I don’t keep them up because I am interested in polo or Middle Eastern art. Or even because I like the images. They serve as a reminder.

  • Book Review: 'The Prague Cemetery' by Umberto Eco

    spacer

"Bookish digressions and odd cultural details are two reasons why we read Umberto Eco. He takes great pleasure in showing readers the monastic care of books in "The Name of the Rose," the kabbalah in "Foucault's Pendulum" and day-to-day life in Mussolini's Italy in "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana." Without such layers, without his plunging into the minutiae of other eras, it just wouldn't be an Eco novel."

  • 55th London International Antiquarian Book Fair 2012

    spacer

The dates for the 55th London International Antiquarian Book Fair have been announced and for the first time, the fair will take place in May: Thursday May 24, Friday May 25 & Saturday May 26, 2012. Organised by the ABA (the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association), the Fair will move to a new location - the larger National Hall at Olympia (London W14) with all stands on one level. This move follows on from the success of the 2011 Fair, which saw more stand space sold than ever before and it became evident that the Fair had finally out-grown Olympia 2.
