Partners in Prevention Education (PiPE), a local non-profit group that works with youth and young adults who are victims of violence, is being evicted from their downtown Olympia space. PiPE is currently located at 317 4th Ave E, through a month-to-month sublease with United Community AIDS Network, but has been told to leave by the end of February.

PiPE provides support and tools to “street-involved” and marginalized young people to heal from the traumas resulting from being victims of violence such as sexual assualt and hate crimes, and to empower them to engage in violence prevention. PiPE services include counseling, advocacy, and referral to emergency shelter and other social services. Many of PiPE’s clients are homeless, and a majority are LGBT,...

    New Biz Oly: Cornerstone

    February 8, 2012

Introducing you to new locally-owned businesses...
    The Cornerstone

Ryan Reykdahl’s restaurant, The Cornerstone, is best summed up by the mission statement printed on his menu: “The Cornerstone respects all dietary needs, with gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. Healthful alternatives are the basis of all our creative concepts. We believe in serving all organic, local foods to keep our community strong.”

Since age 17, Ryan has cooked. Restaurant jobs in Hawaii and California sparked his interest in whole foods. After 8 years as head chef in a Denver vegetarian restaurant, his love of Northwest Native art drew him to this area. A staunch supporter of Olympia’s Farmers’ Market, Calliope, Terra Lumina, Kirsop Farms, and the Co-op, Ryan gives his compostables ...

Music Without Borders: the Buddha Magoo

    February 8, 2012

    By Tucker Petertil

You always hear that Olympia is a small town but maybe it’s not really that small. Take for instance Peter Tucker, a local singer/guitarist who has a name almost opposite of mine. We’ve known about each other since the early 80s when we were both involved in music scene here, but somehow we always missed connecting in person.

It was as if he was a mysterious doppelganger. And after having been mistaken for one another for years, when we finally did meet I’m happy to report that the world did not explode.

I meet this mysterious doppelganger, along with his buddies in the band The Buddha Magoo, on a day when the air is filled with the sound of chainsaws whining their way through the victims of our recent ice storm.

The Buddha Magoo seems to b...

    22nd Lobbies for Reproductive Rights

    February 8, 2012

    By Kristina Mageau

On January 30th, NARAL and Planned Parenthood came together to put on the annual Washington Reproductive Health and Rights Lobby Day at United Churches and at the state capitol.

Thurston County is in the 22nd Legislative District, and there were 7 residents there to rally for their rights, meet with their legislators, and learn more about reproductive issues and lobbying. Diane Lloyd, a Thurston County resident and a working woman, said she came to the lobby day because she wanted “to find out how they [Planned Parenthood] do things.”

One of the reproductive issues being discussed was family planning. Diane said that cutting family planning “would cut services to a very large percentage of our poorer population that really needs it, who has no...

Kill All Redneck Pricks comes home on film

    February 8, 2012

    By Elizabeth Jenkins
The nineties were a highly coveted decade of music in Olympia. Locals get that nostalgic glint in their eye when reflecting on that golden age, an uninhibited time of thrashing guitars and debauchery.

William Badgley captures that essence in his directorial debut, Kill All Redneck Pricks: a documentary film about a band called KARP. The film chronicles the journey of these local rock heroes from their alienated teen years in Tumwater to the creation of the band’s on-stage personas and ultimate collapse. Badgley, who made the trek from Yakima multiple times in the mid-nineties to watch the band perform, remembers that “the quality of [KARP’s] friendship was something that differentiated them from other bands.”

    Taking this into co...
