About

Ordered Movements is a blog about how we can shape our personalities to find more freedom and meaning in life.

There are two sides to this:

On one side, there are the technical aspects of changing our personalities. They are about understanding the mind, habits and psychology. They are about strategic planning and smart decisions. They are about order.

On the other side, there is the question of direction. Once we accept that we have options, a deeper question of meaning comes up. There is not much to go by. But we know one thing: nothing will stay the same. At some point we’ll die and whatever we create will fade. This is about movement.

Things I Believe In
Here are a few concepts that I believe are central to understanding change:

inhibitions and expression – There is a part of us that strives toward unrestrained creative expression. And there is a part of us that wants to protect ourselves by holding back. Wherever we want to go, we need to let go of fear and learn to give 100%.

freedom and discipline – I think where we ultimately try to go is a place of freedom. Ironically, the most effective way to get there is often through the discipline of rigid, self-imposed routines.

simplicity – It’s simple: Less is more. When get rid off clutter, we can start to put attention on what matters.

equanimity – In the end, no one will remember us. So we might as well relax a little.

Types of Posts

Understanding things intellectually is important. But being practical and relevant even more. You will find these types of posts here:

experience reports – I try out different routines, behaviors to see what happens. Then I’ll tell you what I find out.

psychological research I write about research when it can help us to get better results or understand ourselves better.

how-to-posts

philosophical posts

book reviews, interviews, etc.

traffic reports – Monthly report with a detailed analysis of the development of the blog.

My Pledge To You

Here is what I want this blog to be like: useful, reflective, beautiful, well-written, popular, sometimes funny and cool. Now let me make some promises:

-       I will be systematic, relentless and courageous in pursuing my own journey.

-       I will share what I learn and what I can teach in frequent, high quality posts.

-       I want writing about my experiences to serve as a means to help you instead of an end in itself.

-       I will always be honest and never compromise the quality of this blog.

About Myself

My name is Brian.

There will be more detail at some other point, so let me be short here.

I currently live in London where I am a graduate student in psychology at UCL. For a long time I was rather confused about what to do with my life. Three years ago I became interested in changing my personality. Somehow this just hadn’t occurred to me before. This was very liberating. And fulfilling.

When I have to take a decision I try to ask two questions:

1) Who do I want to be?

2) Will this help me become more like that person?

This has been exciting.

I’ve changed a lot. I’m happier now. And it feels as if I’m just getting started.

Hi Brian,

I’m working on changing the way my brain works too. And I agree it is liberating. Wonderful to read your thoughts.
