Oh Dear I Made A Stupid Boo Boo Last Week Sorry

spacer Hi all, thanks for stopping by.

They do say we learn from our mistakes, which of course is very true, and I made one last week that has taught me to slow down….a bit…

Before I explain my mistake I would like to apologize to everyone that had left a comment on my blog last week, unfortunately my mistake has stripped them all away….. sorry. I have managed to retrieve some comments from my email inbox, but the majority have gone.

Allow me to explain…

I was having a couple of issues with my previous hosting company which resulted in my blog being slow to load. So I started using CloudFlare, a Content Delivery Network (CDN) which, by changing my DNS settings, super charged my loading times around the globe.

As that hosting was coming up for renewal I started looking around at other packages and decided to go with Hostgator, who transferred all of my sites for me.

During the transfer I stopped going through CloudFlare so as to asses the resources being used and compare the new hosting with the old, before the renewal of my old hosting was due.

I then noticed that CloudFlare was integrated with Hostgator on their C-Panel so got in touch with both Hostgator and CloudFlare about which account to use.

I was told by CloudFlare that I could either close my current account and set up a new mini account via C-Panel or wait for the transfer to complete and start using my current account on CloudFlare.

So…. Having seen the transfer complete I started using my account on CloudFlare to deliver my content around the globe again.

All was going well until Saturday, when I came to my PC and couldn’t access my blog at all spacer Having got in touch with CloudFlare and explained the situation they asked if I had changed my IP address recently, “yes I just changed hosting last week”.

Then came the clanger…..

The settings that I thought were changed automatically on CloudFlare had to be changed manually…. and I hadn’t done that spacer

So all the work I had done on my blog last week was on the old hosting server and not the new one, meaning that when the old hosting account closed all my fresh content and all of your comments from last week disappeared.

Luckily I always keep a copy of my blog posts so it was just a matter of re-publishing it to the new server but all of your comments, unfortunately, have been lost.

All I can do is put my hands up and apologize, sorry everyone.

Share your experiences please: Have you ever used a CDN?

If so who, and how is it?

Have you ever made a similar mistake?

Until next time, please accept my apologies.

P.S. Have you noticed the free gifts on offer from my sidebar? They change on a daily basis so be sure to check them out spacer

Geez Barry, sorry to hear about your problems.

I tried changing to cloudflare a couple of months ago which meant my blog was out of action until the changeover. I used the special button supplied by Hostgator, but nothing happened and there was no changeover. So I had to revert back to Hostgator.

At least you backed up all of your blog posts.

A lesson to us all. Backup, backup and more backups spacer

      Hi Des,

Your blog shouldn’t be out of action at all mate. If you change the DNS settings to point to cloudflare then it should go through really smoothly…. Just don’t change hosting companies during the process spacer

I’ve been checking my resources in Hostgator and aren’t seeing anything of concern spacer

Yes mate, always keep a copy and have a back up handy spacer

      Thanks Des,

      Have a good week mate,

    Wow Barry, sorry that happened.

I’ve yet to experience anything like that but I can just imagine the frustration. I’m surprised that when you spoke with CloudFlare that they didn’t tell you it had to be done manually. Glad the only thing that was lost was comments.

I had someone bring that service to my attention just last week but I guess I’m not understanding it’s full purpose. I really haven’t had time to research it though so that is also on my list of things to do. Now I know who to come to with questions.

Sorry this happened Barry but I sure hope all of that is behind you now.

    Enjoy your week!

      Hi Adrienne,

Oh I was spitting feathers Saturday and even tried getting one months hosting from my previous hosting company to try and retrieve all of the comments, but they’d deleted everything from my account.

I was also a little surprised that CloudFlare didn’t explain that I had to change the IP address manually as they’re on the ball normally, still lesson learnt.

What CloudFlare does is it re-roots your site through their delivery network to ensure faster loading times and tighter security. As it’s run by fellow web masters when one reports a spammer or security risk that spammer or risk is blocked from all the sites on CloudFlare. They also keep a copy of the current website so if the server goes down our sites remain up.

It is a good service that I’ll be using again in the near future spacer

Thanks Adrienne, I’m heading your way soon spacer

      Respect and Regards,
      Barry

    Hi Barry
wow what a nightmare for you, I did try to go to your blog over the weekend and wondered why I could not access it? Another reason to back up my blog posts. Glad you are back up and running spacer

      Hi Pauline,

Sorry i lost your comments from last week, we were having a good chat in them as well spacer

I do back up my blog on a regular basis but I was backing it up from my new server not the old one spacer If I could’ve got to my old hosting account for just 10 minutes I’d have solved the problem….. but alas spacer

      Thanks Pauline,

      Take care,

Hey Barry, I’ve been using MaxCDN for about a year now. (To be honest I’d almost forgotten about them and just logged in to check that everything was running LOL).

Bro if you’re not making mistakes you’re not making enough progress/improvements on the site. spacer

I’m also using Hostgator and love the support they have. Those guys have saved my butt more than once. I think you’ll like them.

Hope you have a great week! Make it a productive one!

    Talk soon.

      Hi Warren,

I haven’t heard of Max CDN but they obviously work for you if you haven’t had to check on them for over a year now spacer

ha ha yes that’s very true Warren. Mistakes do tend to go hand in hand with progress don’t they…… and at least i only lost some comments.

It’s good to know that you rate Hostgator and their support. It can be concerning when we first swap for fear of going backwards, but i seem to be going forwards now and am keeping an eye on the issues I had with old hosting to see if they appear again, which they haven’t yet spacer

      Thanks Warren,

      Take good care mate,

Hi Barry, sorry to hear about the snafu! But the blog is moving along quickly now. I love Host Gator. I switched from Blue Host awhile back and I’m glad I did.

      Hi Ileane,

Yes the blog is moving quite quickly now, which is why I was so gutted at losing so many top comments….. Still another lesson learnt spacer

I tried setting up with BlueHost but wasn’t comfortable transferring my sites myself so canceled that account and went with Hostgator instead. First impressions are that I made a wise choice.

      Take care Ileane,

Perky is sorry he couldn’t help when you needed it mate! spacer But I am so pleased that you managed to get it sorted in the end.

As you know Barry I am in the process of switching servers myself so I am going to be very mindful of what has recently happened to you when I change. Might just have a little chat with you beforehand! spacer

Glad to hear you are getting on well with HostGator been using them for a couple of years now and never had a problem.

Just think of the experience your gaining along the way! Doesn’t it just make you feel a whole lot better spacer ?

Seriously mate when you told me I really felt for you as I know what you have had to put up over the past few months. But at least it’s all behind you now.

    Onward and upward mate!

      Hi Ian,

No worries mate, I got it sorted in the end.

You’re always welcome to call me up for a chat Ian. One thing I’ll say, when switching hosting from your problem one, don’t renew your hosting but don’t close your account either, that way if you do need to find anything on the old server it might still be there, rather than deleted spacer

Hostgator seem much more on the ball and when the support changes from one person to another we don’t have to repeat ourselves all over again spacer I found them to be very helpful and every support agent carried on from where the previous one left off….. how good is that mate spacer

The experience I’m gaining along the way!? Yes it really does make me feel better Ian ha ha you cheeky person spacer

Like I said over Skype Ian, it wouldn’t have been so bad if they hadn’t deleted my account straight away. I could then have grabbed the WP Contents folder and corrected everything.

Yes at last the problem, and last few months, is behind me now….

Tap Tap Tap…. I look forward to it mate spacer Just have to mind I’m not playing a game on that day spacer

Did you try the book end I spoke of on Skype? If so has it helped at all?

      Take care Ian,
      Speak soon mate,

    Hi Barry,

Glad you got that all sorted. You certainly have had your trails with your blog technical problems and come through with all smiling.

I’ve no idea what you’re talking about with these Content Delivery Networks, I’ll have to have a wee read up about them and bring into the light. I also use HostGator and to date, have never had a problem.

Take Care Barry and hope the week goes smoothly for you after all that.
