Media Release – Artists to conduct volatile experiments at the Fringe
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Artists to conduct volatile experiments at the Fringe
Perth, Western Australia – Monday 5th February, 2012 – On the weekend of February 11th and 12th 2012, 1-5pm, “Occupy Art Lab” will take place at the Perth Fringe Festival in the old Treasury Building, staging a series of workshops, performance poetry, hip-hop, visual art experiments and dance interventions as part of a global weekend of action.
To kick off, Oron Catts from Tissue Culture & Art Project will explain how any layperson can extract and share their DNA. Following this Graffiti Research Lab will give tips on ways people can express themselves as street artists in Perth. Simultaneously, on the streets of Perth, dance artists will stage a series of small incursions organised by local performance company Hydra Poesis.
“It’s a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to shake things up, to come along and learn some artful tricks, as well as enjoy some moving performances” said Michelle Braunstein, Occupy Art Collective member.
Also in attendance will be Carl Scrase, runaway Occupy Melbourne “Social Engineer” who came to Perth to escape the heat of Mayor Robert Doyle’s hate campaign against him for his challenge to Doyle’s use of excessive violence against peaceful protesters.
“Occupy Art Lab will be an explosion of radical creativity. We will be mixing our passion for a better world with our love of art. It’s not to be missed!” said Scrase.
In the spirit of the Occupy Wall Street movement’s “Free School” model, the sessions on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February will be at no cost to the public.
“Fringeworld has been extremely generous in allowing us to occupy the Treasury building during the weekend. We welcome the people of Perth to come and join us in catalysing change creatively” said Braunstein.

Press Release – Occupy New Norcia – an Australia Day of Reconciliation
Thursday, 26 January, 2012. New Norcia, Western Australia
On January 26, Occupy Perth joined two survivors of Australia’s Stolen Generation on a tour of the township of New Norcia in an act of reconciliation. Two survivors, Tammar Wally and her elder sister Evelyn shared stories of being removed from their families and kept as “inmates” at the Monastery’s orphanage.
Occupy New Norcia was organized in solidarity with the 40th Anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy and also with the international Occupy movements International Day of Indigenous Resistance.
Tammar and Evelyn had been taken from their families and placed in the care of the New Norcia Monastery when Tammar was barely a toddler. Their families had camped outside the Monastery in protest, and on one occasion broke down the front door in an attempt to rescue their children.
On a walking tour of the monastery and township, Tammar and Evelyn pointed out where children would work, live, play and go to school.
