Los Angeles: Fancy Wonder Free

February 10th, 2012

spacer

James Gobel’s latest exhibition, Fancy Wonder Free features work created during the past year that was inspired by the German Expressionists Otto Dix and Christian Schad.

Riffing on these artists and the political and social atmosphere of the 1920s and 1930s, Gobel portrays “Bears” (large, bearded gay men) in both social settings and as solitary figures, depicting his subjects not in paint but in felt and yarn. Some compositions refer directly to Dix or Schad, while other references are more nuanced. Check it out at Steven Turner Contemporary. Click here for more info. Opening Reception: Saturday, February 11, 6 – 8 PM

Steve Turner Contemporary: 6026 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036

Give & Get with Darren Craig

February 9th, 2012

spacer

If you ever find yourself working with Darren Craig, consider yourself lucky. He’s one of the most talented artists (commercial & otherwise) I’ve had the pleasure of working with. While we met at Mirrorball here in New York, he’s since moved back to LA to join his business partner in expanding their joint venture, The Uprising Creative. There are a lot of loves in Darren’s life; The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Japanese Tattoo art, branded band design…though all is trumped by his beautiful wife, son and daughter.

spacer

What Craig Would Love to Give: A DAY OFF. My wife and I are going non-stop and rarely take the time to slow down and take care of ourselves. I would love to give her an entire day to herself (and if she decided to have sex with me that would be awesome too)!

What Craig Would Love to Get: My wife and I have a son who’s 4 1/2 and a daughter who’s 7 months so it’s very easy to get lost in our everyday duties as parents and forget to make time for our marriage.

Give & Get with Tuesday Bassen

February 9th, 2012

spacer

I met Tuesday Bassen at the launch of Buy Some Damn Art. It was a fantastic merging of worlds and she was as artsy and friendly and stylish as ever. After getting home and researching her work, I was blown away by her illustrations. Bassen co-runs Studio Sweet Studio with Meg Lewis and has her hands on multiple creative projects around town. Her drawings have appeared in the New York Times and Creative Quarterly among others. She what’s on her mind this Valentines holiday…

spacer

What Bassen Would Love to Give: My Partner, Pete Gamlen, would love this fraternal log pin; it’s mystical and mysterious, seems dangerous, and is designed well. It seems like something out of his illustrations!

What BassenWould Love to Get: I love shoes that make an easy transition between casual and professional. I try to make all of my outfits bridge that gap so that I’m prepared for anything in my home: NYC.

How World Cultures Influence Fashion

February 9th, 2012

spacer

Traditional costuming from around the globe is a constant inspiration for the fashion industry. Culture to Catwalk: How World Cultures Influence Fashion by Kristen Knox of The Clothes Whisperer traces the roots of today’s ready-to-wear lines back to cultural styles from around the globe.

spacer

Culture to Catwalk explores the trajectory of fashion design, born as an industry around the same time that Orientalism swept Europe and colonies were established in Africa and India. Fashion incorporated these new exotic themes into its creativity and became inextricably mixed with ethnic and cultural sartorial traditions. The book’s narrative also comes full circle, going from local to global and back to local again to see what’s happening today in fashion in these countries and look at the effect the internet and globalization has had on design.

Give & Get with Elliot Aronow

February 9th, 2012

spacer

Meet Elliot Aronow. He’s a man of many titles with a job that affords him the opportunity to matchmake. As the host, producer, publisher and editor of OUR SHOW, he’s programed music and cultural content for brands ranging from Topshop, Theory, J. Crew and Puma. Elliot’s also the Creative Director of RCRD LBL and the face of the bespoke tailoring brand, Brooklyn Tailors. Busy as a bee, he still found time to share his picks, here they are.

spacer

What Aronow Would Love to Give: This new book on the early ’90s Vogue scene! Sorta edgy for a relative gift but sometimes you just need to go with the flow. The looks in here are IN-CREDIBLE!

What Aronow Would Love to Get: I’d love this purple cashmere cardigan from Uniqlo. It has a lovely pop to it and would pair well with some Doc Martens and a gingham shirt. I’ve really started to covet it since all the NYC stores have been sold out of smalls for months—disappointing for a Japanese brand. Uniqlo I thought y’all had us little guys?!

Give & Get for Valentines Day

February 9th, 2012

spacer

In preparation for Valentines day, I thought I’d do something a little different this year. Rather than ignore societal norms with Chinese take-out and a loving post-it note (a yearly tradition with my husband and I), I figured I’d throw the spotlight beyond the typical gift guide.

I reached out to many of the colorful characters I call friends, and got some fantastic responses back. Enjoy their picks, as we’d all love to give and get a little love, recognition and support throughout the year, not just next tuesday. And don’t worry we’re still going for Chinese!

spacer

I’ll kick it off!

What I’d Love to Give: My husband‘s stressed out. Work’s never-ending, the to-do list’s forever mounting. He deserves a Sunday afternoon of relaxation. I recently received a gift certificate to Great Jones Spa, here in NYC and spent a few hours just lounging in the pools. It was heavenly. I want him to do the same.

What I’d Love to Get: I’ve had my eye on this Claire Vivier bag for two months now. I saw it on a buyer’s blog and I’ve been anticipating it’s arrival at Steven Alan. I love that it’s practical and casual with colorful purpose. I might even gift it to myself this coming month.

Color: Evergreen Country Living

February 8th, 2012

spacer

As much love as Brooklynites have for their borough, it sometimes seems as if everyone here is trying to escape to the greener side. I often find myself working on a website and then BAM I’m looking at real estate I can’t afford in the middle of nowhere, Maine. How did I leave photoshop and get to this Tumblr of photographs of fields? Mysterious. In this week’s post, I’m embracing my imaginary country life.

Steven Alan Presentation, FW2012

February 8th, 2012

spacer

Fashion Week’s in full swing here in New York and to kick off, I’m sharing some photos I took at this morning’s Fall Winter 2012 presentation at Steven Alan.

spacer

The theme encompassed 1940′s Mexico City and the mix of metallics, textures and warm detailing translated into a beautifully cohesive collection throughout. This brand is one of my favorites (not because I did a bit of consulting work with them late last year), but because the team behind the clothing is one of the nicest, smartest, most down-to-earth teams I’ve encountered in the fashion business.

spacer

The backdrop mimicked cement in a soft and fluid way, providing the subtle texture needed to bounce off the fabrics. It made you feel like you could be within a cityscape or even an abstract painting.

spacer

And finally, I’ll leave you with the lovely and chic Maleeha Khan who’s recently joined the SA family to run social creative content.

Repetition Elsewhere: Cecilia Paredes

February 7th, 2012

spacer

Every year there appears to be an adaptation of the wallflower as wallpaper trend. Nonetheless, it’s fascinating to see various artist interpretations.

spacer

Today, Lisa Toff passed along the work of Peruvian artist, Cecilia Paredes, by way of The Citrus Report.

spacer

The body paint is intricate, the gestural expression, compelling. Quite a nice balance of color and mixed media composition.
