5 Things To Do When You Visit The Big Apple

New York is one of my favorite places the visit. Though the hustle and bustle can soon wear out those who aren’t used to it, there’s so much to do that it’s always worth a visit. And despite the sometimes high prices, an enjoyable visit to New York doesn’t have to cost a lot. Here are some great things you can enjoy at a reasonable price.

1.  Hit The Beach

When you think about things to do in New York, the beach is probably the last thing on your mind, but if it’s a nice summer day, then Rockaway Beach is just five miles from JFK. It’s a great place to walk along the boardwalk and enjoy all the outdoor activities taking place in the fresh ocean breezes. Swimming, surfing, fishing, skating and volleyball are all on offer – and you can grab a bit to eat while you relax.

2. Browse Some Books

One of my favorite New York haunts is the Barnes and Noble in Union Square. So many floors of books, so little time. There is something for everyone here, so you can leave your kids in the children’s section while you browse nearby shelves, or work a shift system with your significant other with one of you at the cafe while the other roams the store. I could – and often do – spend hours in that store, and even if I don’t buy anything, it’s a great experience.

3. See The Statue of Liberty

Say what you will, there’s no more iconic symbol than this great lady and every visitor to New York should see her. The trip to Ellis Island on the Staten Island Ferry is enjoyable and the museum is fascinating. Don’t worry, there’s a budget option. Cross the water to Jersey City and you can view the Statue of Liberty from the other side – for free! While you’re there, enjoy a walk along the waterfront – there’s no better pastime for a sunny day.

4. Enjoy Nature

Want to see flowers, trees, shrubs, birds and bees in their natural environment? Then take a trip to Queens (no, I’m not kidding!) to visit the living museum that is the Queens Botanical Garden. You’ll really enjoy it. While you’re in Queens, there’s an unusual sight you mustn’t miss – the home of the Hindu Temple Society of North America. The ornate Ganesha Temple, complete with carved elephant heads, was built in India and shipped to America. And don’t forget the the Flushing Meadows Corona Park – there’s lots to see and do there.

5. Visit Central Park

I’ve loved Central Park ever since my first visit there on a freezing February day. Even then, a hardy soul was skating the wide pathways, which embodies the spirit of Central Park. Since then, I’ve visited many times, each time seeing something new – mime artists, jugglers and entertainers of all descriptions, while beautiful art installations decorated the park. It costs nothing to look, so make sure you stop and sit a while.
