I am always up for a good challenge, so when Steph from Crafting in the Rain extended the opportunity to participate in her series “Make a Splash” I was totally game. The concept is that she will give us a secret supply item, and we have to make something that includes that item. I love it!
This time, I found a great cable knit sweater at a local thrift store. I decided that my horribly ugly and even more horribly uncomfortable camera strap needed a makeover! I am beyond excited with the result!
Here is how I made it!
Items Needed:
- Sweater
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun/Glue Sticks
- Scrap Fabric
- Measuring Tape
- Straight Edge (yard stick or fabric ruler)
I started out by measuring my camera strap and then measuring the sweater to make sure it would fit. Good thing with sweaters is that they stretch fairly easily! Luckily mine was long enough (I picked up a size Medium and it worked great!)
I cut out one of the “cables” of the sweater that boasted a pretty pattern. One of the edges of the sweater was the hem along the bottom so I left that as is. The opposite edge I simply folded over and hot glued creating a finished hem to the appropriate length of my camera strap.
I also cut a scrap piece of fabric the same size as my camera strap. I laid the sweater right side down on my counter, and then topped it with the scrap piece of fabric. Since I cut the fabric the size of my camera strap I used this as my guide to fold the edges of the sweater over the scrap fabric and glued with hot glue forming a nice straight seam.
Next I slipped my camera strap through the new cover! The longest part of this project was getting my camera strap BACK ON MY CAMERA! Seriously! I kept getting it twisted! Sheesh!
What will make your camera strap cozy? Why a soft cozy sweater of course!!! I just love it! I am thinking of adding a few rosettes or even a little pocket for my lens cap out of some more of the sweater!
I think I will make one in multiple colors! I love how comfortable (and cute) it is now!
Head over to Steph’s blog today to see all the other amazing projects from sweaters!
(The pictures are kind of funny because I had to take half of them with my cell phone! It’s hard to photograph your camera! )

Oh my word! I LOVE this. It seems only appropriate that a camera strap would need to get “winterized” too with something cozy like a sweater strap! Gorgeous pics. Thanks for sharing at oopsey daisy!
