The Half

spacer Why the Half Marathon versus any other distance? Well, some may say that it is doable because it is not quite the bite-off as a full marathon, and others might say that it is more of a challenge over the 5K & 10K run’s they have been doing. Either way, it is pretty evident that over the past 5 years, the half marathon is becoming the sweet spot for runners of all ages and fitness levels. Whether one decides to run/walk the entire distance or run the race for a persnal best, all you have to do is a Google search on the word “half marathon” and a litany of results come up for it. Everything from training groups for men and women, to sites that help any individual prepare and train for their first half marathon, to the long list of events that are available from shore to shore. Some are for-profit in nature yet have an incredible venue, while others support special endeavors and charities. It is all up to the runner what he/she wants to do. Choices, choices, choices…

I guess it is safe to say that the half marathon has found its niche amongst many, especially women, who are now rising up in larger groups and doing several each year. It is also safe to say that the level of athlete is also increasing. Personal bests are now the rage amongst the top 5% elite athletes who are sponsored by companies trying to get their brand out there, and they even pay entry fees and other amenities for top finishes. Let’s face it, when that person is on the podium receiving their award, It is a very exhilarating emotion for them, and those who see the brand/logo on the athlete’s jersey quickly associate that product with greatness.

There is something to be said about completing 13.1 miles, giving it your all, and recording your time. It marks a choice you decided to make and a personal conquest that you endeavored to complete. Many say that it translates across into real life situations and circumstances that one finds him/herself in. It helps you sharpen those decision making skills. Perhaps?

At the end of the day, whether running for fun or competing, one can be proud of the fact that they are participating in something that makes a difference in their life makes them push themselves to limits they might not have pushed themselves to before.
