The pieces I’ve selected reflect my interest in what I would call contemporary folk art. I love the genre’s use of bold graphics, as well as its whimsy and mystical qualities. Many of the pieces I selected are reminiscent of early American folk art, especially Katy Horan’s “String Game” and Karen Barbour’s “732.” Both early American folk art and contemporary folk art riff off of the same playful, graphic style and dream-like feel; however, these contemporary pieces have an edge to them, reflecting the ethos of life today versus a time when things were decidedly more simple.
