The Panthers were solid throughout the game, and peppered Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick with 41 shots. Quick proved once again he is an elite goaltender and Florida had no choice but to tip their caps to his great performance.

The Panthers, down five starting forwards due to injury including star Kris Versteeg, were valiant in their effort and will be just fine if they continue to play with such intensity.

An interesting and hot button topic that was a sub-plot to this game was the injury to Mike Richards. Twitter was aflutter last night and two distinct sides of the fence emerged in what was a heated debate in some circles.

For the record, as a member of the media, I never have nor ever will cheer for or hope for anyone being injured. As a fan, I can be and will be emotional in the appropriate settings regarding the success, failure, and health of my team.

What I realized last night through one particular tweet I sent is that fans of their team will defend their player whether they deserve defense or not. Mike Richards will never be forgotten in Sunrise because of this:

I encourage you to look at some of the comments of those that know Richards reputation.

This is just one, though most notable, amongst many instances where Richards has earned the "dirty player" tag. He is listed as one of the most hated players in the NHL and is also has the reputation of not being the most likable personality on or off the ice. His buddies Jeff Carter and Joffrey Lupul tore up the Philadelphia nightlife earning some bad reputations, which made trading them easy for Flyer brass.

Head shots were already a hot topic in the NHL, but the Richards' hit on Booth was the incident that really set wheels of rule reform into motion. Ironically the hit was deemed clean by the NHL, which is such an egregious error there are hardly words to describe it. Be it any other player I would say the same thing. It was a dirty hit. One that required disciplinary action. The NHL failed.

Tuesday night in Carolina, defenseman Derek Joslin elbowed Kris Versteeg in the face in an obvious attempt to injure a player. Joslin fractured Versteeg's nose, which kept him out of the lineup for the Kings game. With the way the game in LA transpired, that might have been the difference. Amazingly, inexplicably, yet predictably Joslin was not punished at all for what should have been a five minute major and a match penalty. Obviously the Panthers were and are furious about this.

Sean Bergenheim played like a man possessed in LA and was easily the best player on the ice for Florida with honorable mentions going to Tomas Kopecky, Tomas Fleischmann, and Jose Theodore. Bergy caught Mike Richards with his head down. He did not lunge into Richards or leave his feet. It was not a calculated hit on a defenseless player, like the hit on Booth. Richards was obviously woozy, retaliated and was called for roughing and slashing, and did not return to the game.

Immediately speculation about Richards possibly having a concussion was rampant amongst Panther fans and media. Why? See David Booth above. It does not matter that Booth is no longer with the team. What does matter is Booth may never be the same player again. He is a well-liked down to earth person, unlike Richards, and it was horrifying to see what happened to Booth and the subsequent road to recovery.

&
