Lots 2 Save’s Shopping Tale

The “sort of” lost son.

One day my husband took my 7 year old shopping to the Lowe’s Home Improvement store.  I think he was looking to replace our kitchen faucet.  My son became interested in all the cool tools, so my husband let him know he would be one aisle over.  While my son was looking around by himself, a Lowe’s employee walked by and then stopped and asked him if he was lost.  My son said “no, my dad’s in the next aisle over”.  Instead of checking for my husband, the employee told my son to come with him and had him walk all the way through the store to the customer service desk.  At the desk was a man anxiously waiting and the employee showed him my son and then asked the man if this was his missing son.  (Apparently they had been looking for a lost boy in the store and when they found my son alone it was assumed that he was the lost boy.)  The man told the employee that he had found the wrong kid.  Then the employee turned to my son and asked, “You’re not lost?”  My son looked around the big store and replied, “I am now.”  Then my surprised husband heard on the store intercom that he needed to come to customer service desk.  He couldn’t understand how our son could get lost one aisle over.

Thanks Lowe’s.  We still laugh about it today.

I remember getting “lost” in many a department store when I was a kid…those escalators were just too tempting.

Glad they found each other! We are pretty lucky, in some countries it is extremely dangerous to leave a child alone even for a minute in a public place. When I am in a small uncrowded store (like Trader Joe’s) I have even left my 3 year old in the next aisle over, she always finds me.

haha cute story, at least the employees are looking out for their shoppers spacer

I was at IKEA with my husband and toddler, my DH went to the men’s room and I was left with my daughter (I was 8 months pregnant). All of the sudden I turn around and she isn’t in her stroller, I knew she ran off. So here I am running around a packed IKEA with a huge belly, calling my toddler’s name. Boy was I sweating! After about 3 minutes of looking for her in the surrounding area I come back to the stroller and she’s just sitting there smiling spacer I proceeded to kiss and hug her like never before! Then explain to her why she shouldn’t do that again!

When I was a child (many years ago), we didn’t have Super Wal-Mart stores; but I do remember shopping with my Mother at Famous-Barr in St. Louis. I remember riding the escalators. I still jump on and off them.

haha, your son handled that so well!

My shopping story: We saw a lady at WalMart this year taking items from a cart in her aisle (that belonged to someone else!) and putting them in her cart. They were NOT together. I can’t even imagine what made her think she had the right to do such a thing. I’m still mortified typing it and it was months ago. It’s hilarious to me, in a very not hilarious way, if that makes a bit of sense.

Glad your son and hubby reunited w/o any further ado. spacer

I remember that my dad set a travel alarm clock to go off in my mom’s purse while she was at the store

I was shopping with my 9 mo. old nephew, and his cousin who was close in age. A man asked if they were twins. I said no, as they are only 9 mos. apart. He said oh, that’s worse!

It would be nice if big stores offered a play area for kids while parents shopped…though I imagine that might present liability issues…but it would be much for fun for the parents and the kids!

That’s a great story. I imagine that many kids get lost in Lowe’s…but it’s a good thing your son wasn’t traumatized by feeling he was being kidnapped!

I can appreciate that they were trying to be sure that your child wasn’t lost, but listen to the poor kid! I love the “I am now”

When I was somewhere around 3 I had a fear of escalators. My mother, after trying to convince me for over 5 minutes to get on the escalator decided to go down to see if that would convince me. Instead I stood at the top crying until a nice older woman picked me up and took me down the escalator. Sadly, I still jump on and off of them, afraid of getting caught up on the mechanism!

I was in Target and when I got to the car realized I had been charged wrong. I went back in and the woman told me to get all the bags and she would re-ring everything. I tried to explain to her and she kept yelling that she was confused and not to talk. It was so annoying. Now everytime I go there, I avoid her aisle!

Some people never listen to kids. They should.

Being desperate to go out clothes shopping and taking my two small boys with me . Being at a store in the mall and looking out into the mall snd seeing the 4 year old pushing the 1 and 1/2 year old in his umbrella stroller as fast as he could. The look on the little ones face (excited beyond belief) was priceless.

Ironic to read your post as my husband and I were just talking about times our kids got lost and how close an eye we kept on them everywhere compared to when we grew up and kids just went off to play with no adult supervision.

spacer mallory richardson February 7, 2012 at 10:50 PM

that’s funny! you would think the employee would have listened to your son and checked in the next aisle.

i can remember hiding in the clothes racks with my sister when we went shopping with our mom. we thought we were so funny…until she walked off without us and then we couldn’t find her

I was shopping at Dollar General and was in line waiting patiently to pay. I was like 3-4 customer when the cashier saw I had coupons. She wasn’t too nice. She yelled and said, “You know we don’t take any types of coupons because they are fake.” I was like okay put my stuff down and left. I was baffled she would yell that out loud.

Oh goodness. I was in JC Penny before Christmas and a woman was walking around hollering, trying to find her lost kids. She was going nuts

Reply

spacer Jennifer Hedden February 7, 2012 at 9:32 PM

I can’t believe the employee did that. You would definitely think he would have checked in the aisle first.
