Hip Hip Hvar

Once again my curse with boats set in and it looked like we were going to be stranded on mainland Croatia with nowhere to stay.  All catamaran’s to Hvar from Split were fully booked.  With a reported 30,00 visitors heading to Hvar each day druing the peak months why was I surprised?  I rang the owner of the apartment we were supposed to staying at and told her the sad news.  She had a plan.  There was a car ferry which sailed to the other side of the island.  It was a longer boat trip, it would involve a bus journey at the other end, but it would get us to Hvar that night.  The big problem was that it left at 14.30.  I hung up from my call at 14.27.  The ticket office was at the other end of the pier, it was 40 degrees c and I was carrying a 20kg backpack.  O Jeez.

Beautiful Hvar waterfront

The race was on.  I sprinted to the ticket office and somehow persuaded the vendor to sell me 3 tickets.  My reasoning told me if she was willing to sell me a ticket at 2.28 I must be able to catch the boat at 2.30.  With this hope in mind myself and my 2 friends proceeded to perform the perfect relay.  I galloped from the ticket office and waved to Alex, who was waiting by the ferry, to signal I had the tickets.  She ran to Sam who was guarding the bags in the shade at the other end of the pier. I then ran to the boat to beg them to wait for us.  It was a beast of a boat.  It had thousands of people and their cars on board – it wasn’t likely to wait for me.  Suddenly I heard pants approaching.  Alex and Sam were struggling towards the ferry ramp with 3 huge bags between them.  I shot the staff a pleading look and ran down to meet them.  Thankfully the crew waved us on and we slumped on the deck drowing in sweat.  The captain sauntered past on his way to the wheel.  He handed me a plum out of pity, I looked a state and close to collapse.  We were on the boat though and heading straight for our first night out on the much hyped Hvar.  Some things are just worth a bit more effort!
