Your Hosts

We follow what we would consider to be a Primal/Paleo diet.  We’re not strict, but pretty close.  Since we like to cook, we decided to start our own blog, posting some recipes using nothing but the best “primal” ingredients.  Don’t like to cook? We are hoping to change your mind when you see how easy it can be.  We have kids and so we are always looking to make healthy and tasteful meals that they will eat too.  This is cooking for the whole family!

What do we mean by primal?  Well, we basically try to cook with foods as close to nature, and as close to what we evolved eating, as we can get; keeping things as healthy as we can.  This means if you open up our refrigerator or freezer, you will see a lot of veggies, grass-fed and free-range meat, wild-caught fish, eggs, some fruit, some dairy, and plenty of herbs.  Throw in some spices and you have most of what you need for some great meals.  What you won’t find are things loaded with complex carbohydrates, anti-nutrients, and empty calories like grains, dried legumes, or processed goods.

A bit about us:

We’re the busy parents of two elementary-aged girls and two “middle-aged” cats.  We live “out of town” on 5 acres and built our own house about 5 years ago (on which Casey still has a crazy-long list of projects to complete).  We are some of the original members of CrossFit Fort Vancouver, home of the 2010 CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup Champions, and consider the people there to be our second family.

Casey: I’m a regular guy with a desk job and would officially list my hobbies as woodworking, cooking, hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing – if I had time to actually do any of them.  I have designed and built some of the equipment we use at the gym as well, including our plyo/jump boxes and the pull-up/rings rack, and have many more ideas in store as time and space allow. I have a knack for cooking, and love to experiment and share.  So this place is my spot to post recipes and thoughts on cooking for a healthy, active lifestyle and to show you that anyone really can eat this way and not miss out on enjoying their food.  Maybe with a little help, a few recipes, and the real-world experience from someone else to lean on, others can get past the excuses and give it a try!

Karen: My jobs include a coach at CFFV and a mom!  I enjoy all things vintage, sewing, photography, reading, and gardening (still waiting for my dream garden though!).  I love teaching people that cooking can be easy and healthful eating is delicious, not time consuming  or bland.  My favorite restaurant is my home!  I love to experiment and make new treats, soups, and whatever else I can think of.   Thanks for checking out the blog!  If you try a recipe, make a comment.  Spread the word!
