Tequila in 10 … The Wrap-up

by KeithP on February 7, 2012

That was a fun ten days … tequila, more tequila and mas tequila!  Below is a quick re-cap of the two weeks of posts in chronological order.

- Vipera: a near classic created by Brian Miller while at Death & Co. in NYC, tequila is infused with pear, apple and spices and then mixed with bonded applejack and yellow Chartreuse.  Amazing!

- Camerone: created by spirits/drink writer Paul Clarke as a way of highlighting Bittermen’s mole bitters, tequila is mixed with Amer Picon, Licor 43 and those tasty bitters.

- Badlands: one of many Project Recreates found in this series, the Badlands has been on the drink menu at Mayahuel (in NYC) for some time.  Tequila takes the night off and its cousin from Oaxaca stands in.  Pisco, Dolin Blanc, maraschino liqueur, Cocchi Americano and mole bitters all welcome mezcal to the mixing party.

- Suro-Mago: Phil Ward takes us on an interesting journey with a boozy stirred offering.  Tequila, sherry, elderflower liqueur and bitters all make for one amazing drink.

- Nouveau Carre: featured in the PDT Cocktail Book, Jonny Raglin’s riff on the classic Vieux Carre cocktail works, and works well.  Tequila, Lillet Blanc, Benedictine and bitters are paired together.

- Grand Torino: what do you get when you pair tequila, Batavia Arrack, Meletti Amaro and white crème de cacao?  Another amazing drink from my favorite place in the Big Apple.

- Greta Garbo: created by Eryn Reece of Mayahuel (and soon of Death & Co.), the Greta Garbo is a kicked-up, more flavorful cousin to the venerable Margarita.  Tequila, mezcal, Cherry Heering, lime juice, bitters and agave nectar are shaken up for one tasty libation.

- 2 Cents: a flash back of sorts.

- High Plains Drifter No.2: taken from the Mr. Boston Holiday Cocktails book, this riff on the original drink proves yet again that more often than not, simple is best.  Tequila, sweet vermouth and green Chartreuse (and some friends) are all that is needed for cocktail making bliss.

- Tholian Web: an original from yours truly … beer, tequila and other assorted goodies come together for what we humbly think is a pretty tasty drink.

There you have it.  We hope that you enjoyed playing along. We’ll have a few interim posts as we begin writing up our series, Negroni Nirvana. See you back here real soon.

Tequila in 10: The finale …

by KeithP on January 30, 2012

We made it … after nine (semi) straight days of posts on the wonders that are tequila/mezcal, today’s post is the last in our series dubbed Tequila in 10.  As noted before, this will in no way be the end to our exploration of these spirits as this series has only heightened our interest.

After profiling some interesting tequila-based drinks we struggled with how to end things.  In the end we settled on a little homegrown magic; tapping the not so creative juices that flow from theSpeakista’s drink making mind.  You got it we are subjecting you to yet another one of our creative flights of fancy.

Throughout our ten day journey we’ve seen how good a mixing mate tequila can be.  It holds up spacer to fruit flavors; bitter flavors; loves aromatized and enhanced wines and is equally at home with a variety of sweetening agents.  Recognizing this we set pen to paper for a rough skeleton of a recipe and set out for a little bottle diving on our shelf of goodies and after several fits and starts the Tholian Web was born.  The rich flavor of tequila serves as the backbone to a house of many characters … bitter, sweet, fruity and even spicy heat all come forth on the palate with a nice linger layer of malty goodness.

If you are so inclined please give this one a try and let us know what you think.

Tholian Web
Recipe created by theSpeakista

•    1 1/2 oz reposado or anejo tequila
•    1/2 oz Neisson Rhum Agricole
•    1/2 oz Osborne Amontillado sherry (our barrel aged version was used)
•    1/2 oz chili infused agave nectar
•    ~ 2 oz Hoegaarden beer
•    2 dashes vanilla bitters (our homemade version was used)
•    2 dashes of Angostura bitters
Garnish: none
Glass: rocks glass
Tools: mixing glass, bar spoon and julep strainer

Assembly: add all of the ingredients save the beer to the mixing glass stir for 40 or so revolutions until well stirred/chilled.  Strain the mixture into the serving glass that has been filled with ice and top with the beer.

There you have it, ten days of imbibing tequila-based drinks.  We learned a lot, had a load of fun and in the end, hope you did as well.  We’ll be back soon with a wrap-up of sorts and in the not too distant future … Negroni Nirvana.
