About Jackson

This is the personal weblog of Jackson Miller (thats me). I have been posting here with varying degrees of consistency and quality since 2001. I feel that the most interesting stuff posted here is at the intersection of philosophy and technology.

Generally I post about things related to my interests and ventures. Currently I am pouring my blood and sweat into Bizen – a set of business intelligence tools for franchise owners. I am also a partner in L2M LLC which currently owns two Plato’s Closet retail franchise with more planned. I am also advising BorderJump helping to enable cross-border e-commerce. Once upon a time I tried to launch an analytics company called Statzen. A byproduct is/was Urlzen.com (a link shortener I wrote on Google AppEngine).

I was a co-founder of Side Hobby LLC which launched gpsAssassin for the iPhone (sold to WorldBlender in September 2010). After that initial exposure to mobile development I started developing mobile applications on a contract basis. The most recent one was Wildflowers of the Great Smoky Mountains. (I am no longer developing applications since I am working full-time on Bizen). I think that mobile technology is currently one of the most exciting spaces in business and definitely the most interesting aspect of technology. I have worked at some of the greatest tech startups in Nashville [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

As of June 2010, I am engaged to a very special woman (we are getting married on New Year’s Eve 2010). We took a two-week trip to LA where we were working. I referred to it as our engagement-moon:

I used to own a motorcycle and once took a trip through the Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains. It was awesome:

Currently, I live in Nashville, TN and frequently spend time in Salt Lake City, UT. I have also lived in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Manchester, NH, and New Orleans, LA. One day I will live on the beach.

I have five amazing kids. Here they were at Disneyland in 2011:

I have had a pretty interesting life so far. There was a year where I flew on over 100 flights. There was a year where I almost went bankrupt. There were a couple of years where I bought houses and four years where I had a new child born. Those years are all in the archives and I started writing about them just after living through 9/11 in Washington, DC. Prior to that I studied Jazz in New Orleans and Philosophy at a Southern Baptist University, attended both RNC and DNC national conventions, worked as a cook in fine dining restaurants, organized national conferences, created a community event that has lasted for more than 10 years, and taught high school at an inner-city school.

My dreams include: to create a foundation to fund interesting aspects of education, to help others to become successful entrepreneurs, to get (re)married, to take a significant journey on a sailboat, to run a marathon, to own businesses in multiple countries, to get elected to and hold a public office, and to visit outer space. I feel that each of those dreams is completely achievable and expect that I will succeed at realizing most of them.
