Programs & Curriculum

The department offers a 60-credit Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Communications Design, and two 48-credit Master of Science (MS) degrees in Communications Design or Package Design.


Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Communications Design

A 60-credit program administered over two years leading to a Master of Fine Arts terminal degree, the program emphasizes full-time studio practice in Communications Design—print and digital media, artifacts, information, environments, and systems. The components of the MFA program include an emphasis on studio practice, research and scholarship, design teaching methodologies, and academic studies of visual media such as history, theory, critical analysis, aesthetics, and related humanities and social sciences.


Master of Science (MS) Communications Design

The Master of Science in Communications Design is a 48-credit degree program that deals with all aspects of transforming information and ideas into visual forms. Course work involves a wide range of verbal and visual language systems. Design projects relate to extensive communications applications involving various aspects of society. Representative solutions utilize graphic design, corporate identity, publications design, motion design/time-based media, interaction design, and typography.


Master of Science (MS) Package Design

The Communications Design Department's Master of Science in Package Design is a 48-credit degree program that offers a broadly based curriculum centered on the decision-making process for package development for products, and features courses in package design, brand development, visual communications, digital technology, marketing, and structural packaging.


Applications are submitted through Pratt's admissions office. The deadline for applications is January 5.
