The City is in the environmental/public outreach phase of the project. On Saturday, the City is hosting a public workshop where you can express your concerns and provide valuable input.

NAHBS Rolls Into Sacramento

February 07, 2012

The excitement is building each day for the internationally renowned show lovingly called NAHBS. The North American Handmade Bicycle Show is rolling into town for the first time ever, and Sacramento is gearing up to welcome the 7,000 bicycle aficionados that will take over downtown. The action starts the week of February 27, ramps up on March 2 with the start of the show, and doesn’t end until everyone is loaded back onto bicycles and packed into planes on Sunday evening.

We’re hearing rumors from all over Sacramento that there will be bicycle parades, art shows, parties (and afterparties) and rides. It’s starting to feel like all of May Is Bike Month will be stuffed into 3 days!

The show features all conceivable iterations of bicycles and all different kinds of events. Whatever you’re into—whether it’s racing, cruising, running errands, touring, or just having a good time around Sacramento—NAHBS & its entourage will have something for you.

Don’t miss the party! Here’s the lineup as we know it:

—Go to the NAHBS website and buy your tickets. SABA members get discounted registration! Email nahbs@sacbike.org and we’ll send you a discount code to use at check-out. You get $2 off and NAHBS will donate 2 bucks to SABA!

—Pig on a (Rex) Bike: A Tribute to Steve Rex, hosted by Mulvaney’s and Ruhstaller Brewing. A festive evening to raise a glass to Sacramento bicycle builder Steve Rex will be Saturday, March 3, 6-9 pm at Mulvaney’s B&L located at 1215 19th Street in Midtown Sacramento. Tickets are available in advance for $32, $37 at the door. Proceeds will be donated to SABA!

—Sacto Pedal Jam: A NAHBS Afterparty. We’ll be partying at Old Soul at the Alley on Saturday night, right after a Pig on a (Rex) Bike, with a showcase of some of the best Sacramento has to offer: Sacramento MoFo will be on site whipping up late-night snacks, Lockdown Brewery is towing their draft trailer down to pour some pints, Old Soul Coffee Co. is extending their hours to gas you up for late night festivities, frame builders will be jamming for a couple sets, and valet bike parking will be waiting to keep your ride safe and sound. Swing by Liestal Alley (between Capitol & L Street and 17th & 18th Streets) from 8 pm onward. Cover to enter the beer garden and Old Soul is $5.

—ArtBike Parade: Take a spin in and around Midtown on Saturday, March 3 to cruise by 40+ local eateries. The parade kicks off at Fremont Park at 2 pm and follows a 2.5 mile route that ends at the Convention Center two hours later. Everyone is welcome to decorate their bike (or themselves!) for this fun and creative ride-around.

—Stay tuned to ArtBike!, a “bicycle-centric community art exhibition”, happening in conjunction with NAHBS. Look for the brightly painted bikes parked in racks around downtown, and check out the ArtBike! website for the full schedule.

SABA Adventures by Bike – Shopping at IKEA

February 06, 2012

Last year we updated our office with nice, new IKEA desks, making more room for our wonderful volunteers and staff.  Obviously, being a bicycle advocacy group, the best way we could accomplish this task was to do it by bike!

For this adventure, we enlisted the help of Tim and Cassidy Castleman, co-owner of Practical Cycle in Old Sacramento.  They have a nice fleet of trailers and flat-beds from Worksman Cycles that they graciously let us use for our outing.

Our trip took us a quick 3.6 miles from Old Sacramento through West Sacramento and finally to IKEA where there was covered bicycle parking & plenty of twine to hold down our purchases. We’re happy to report that the SABA office has comfortably settled in. We’re looking forward to our next bicycle shopping trip.

Are you planning a shopping adventure? Let us know and don’t forget to send your pictures too!
