Modern Patio Home

Nov 23, 2011   //   by admin   //   Architecture, Blog, Modern Home, Modern House, Modern Living, Outdoor  //  Comments Off

This modern patio home architecture is contemporary yet cozy – not an easy combination to do right. Marcio Kogan of Brazil architecture firm Studio MK27 created this patio house design to bring nature indoors on a whole new level. The courtyard house opens to the outdoors for a sense of boundlessness, but elements like concrete ceilings up the cozy factor. On the other side of the expansive glazing, large patio areas essentially double the home’s living space. The ground floor houses the home’s social spaces – kitchen, service area and living room with an amazing fireplace feature – while upstairs, three bedrooms enjoy privacy while the master opens onto a rooftop deck. Tucked Roofline Shelters An Outdoor Living/Dining

Behind the construction of the Hickey Residence stood the talented team of Glen Irani Architects. Part of a larger project developed by the architects, this residence strives to introduce a seamless connection between the front and rear gardens. This was obtained by designing a collection of rooms half hovering above the outdoor living area. This gives the impression of a larger garden space and hold the power to gather family and friends around the dinner table for unforgettable social encounters. Located in Venice, California, the Hickey Residence displays an interesting line, with opposing sides tucked back into the volumetric architecture. Overhangs and the curves of the roof help increase the amount of indirect natural light reaching the interiors. A paved driveway in the front leads to the metal garage door, integrated in the overall design. The 4,000 square foot residence rests the tired, but happy inhabitants and their guests in 4 bedrooms. The climate allows this architectural solution to be comfortable and feel naturally close to the environment. Who here thinks the outdoor living area was a great idea? Read more >>

Transforming a 60s Bungalow Into a Two Story Modern Home

Nov 21, 2011   //   by admin   //   Architecture, Blog, Modern Home, Modern House  //  Comments Off

Initially built in the 60′s by architect Wilfried Hilger for his family, House S was recently redesigned by German studio CHRIST.CHRIST.Associated Architects. The existing single-level bungalow was cleverly transformed into a two-story contemporary residence. Located in Wiesbaden, Germany, the modern dwelling is a masterpiece of contemporary urban developments, creating a balanced volumetric architecture that allows further building if necessary. The roof line creates new opportunities in residential dwelling, especially since the new family of four living here needed more space, but did not have enough room on the property to build more. Montana Cottage on Stilts by Andersson Wise Architects

Nov 3, 2011   //   by admin   //   Architecture, Blog, Modern Home, Modern House, Outdoor  //  Comments Off

This cozy cottage on stilts may be small on space, but it’s big on style. This award-winning cabin design by Andersson Wise Architects is warm, woody and welcoming – everything a cottage should be. This stilt home sits perched on a steep hillside, surrounded by dense forest of 200-ft.-tall Ponderosa pines and overlooking the still waters of Flathead Lake. The wood clad house is designed in a simple rustic style, with natural timber cladding both its facade and interiors. This cottage home frames breathtaking views through its floor-to-ceiling glass walls, but these are best enjoyed from the outdoor terrace overhanging the cliff – what a view! Stone Home Pictures – Natural Design by Prentiss Architects

Sep 1, 2011   //   by admin   //   Blog, Modern Home, Modern House  //  Comments Off

We came across these stone home pictures from Seattle-based Prentiss Architects and thought we’d share. This 2,800-sq.-ft. stone home design features a low profile and earthy materials that make it a perfect fit for its environment, overlooking Griffin Bay, and overlooked by a trio of stately old-growth trees which the architect opted to preserve and incorporate into the architecture. The trees are as much of the design as the architecture itself. Inside, wood and stone are the perfect complement to the views while a fireplace feature provides the perfect interior focal point. The natural stone house features floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls that open onto a deck and outdoor entertaining area. And providing a bird’s eye view of these pristine surroundings, this rooftop garden house is indeed an ode nature. Prentiss Architects

We recently received a press release with information regarding the The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA. Here is the project description we were sent: “Featuring 860 sq m/9,257 sq ft, the The Ritz-Carlton Spa redefines the Hong Kong spa experience. With nine deluxe treatment rooms and two couples’ suites, plus floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views and soothing therapies, this exceptional spa in Hong Kong is the perfect place to leave the world behind. Upon entering ESPA, the guest moves into softened shapes and natural textures. Overhead a floating cocoon shaped porcelain art installation developed with artist Eva Menz is suspended from the ceiling – creating a balance and bringing nature into the space.  The walls are upholstered in horsehair, and the perimeter of the floor is warm timber infused with bronze metal, contrasting with the central reception area’s ivory stone floor. The seating and lighting elements are gracefully curved and low tables in naturally contoured shapes reinforce the feeling of being safely cocooned. Read more >>

Meditation House Plans: “Floating” Glass Home

Aug 31, 2011   //   by admin   //   Blog, Modern House, Modern Living  //  Comments Off

Architect David Jameson was inspired by a tea house idea when he developed this subtle yet stunning meditation house plan. Consisting of a volume suspended within a frame, Japanese architecture inspired this glass and steel home as a space for meditation, relaxation and reflection. In contrast to its floor-to-ceiling glazed walls, a solid wood door welcomes you in, complementing the natural woody surroundings while providing a sure separation between indoors and out, raw and refined, wild and sophisticated. Illuminated only by floor lamps, this forest home is a glowing beacon in the night air. David Jameson
