Re-Abolish Slavery and Human Trafficking

Why the Academy?

We live in a deeply interconnected world, where the crime of modern-day slavery occurs both in plain sight and in the shadows.  As such, combating slavery requires new tactics.  Only by rethinking the idea of ‘movement’ through the scope of Smart Activism and Open-Source Activism and by equipping ourselves, can a movement with lasting effect take hold. This creates holistic change in a world where slavery currently is all too commonplace.

Join us at the Abolitionist Academy in San Francisco, CA and the Backyard Academy at a location near you.   Together we will end modern-day slavery in our lifetime.

The San Francisco Abolitionist Academy

The purpose of the San Francisco Abolitionist Academy is to educate individuals about the global, national, state, and local problem of human trafficking and modern-day slavery.  Specifically, experts in the field provide up-to-date, thorough, and relevant information and also suggest practical and effective tools and strategies to combat modern-day slavery and to assist the survivors.  As students, homemakers, business men and women, educators, clergy, health-care providers, mental health professionals, law enforcement, and the like, you can use the tools learned at the Academy in your everyday lives to help “set the captives free”.

Toward this end, the San Francisco Academy offers intensive one-week courses (40 classroom hours) related to one’s personal interests and/or professional background and training.  The courses are described in the “Topics” section of this website (see link above).  At the conclusion of the courses, successful participants receive a “Certificate of Competency” highlighting the core competencies learned throughout the week.  The cost of attending the San Francisco Academy is $275/week or $549/two weeks.

The Backyard Abolitionist Academy

The Backyard Academy is a three-day event that takes places in cities across the U.S. and the world (i.e., in your own backyard).  This Academy addresses the first principles of the courses taught in our longer, one-week Academy in San Francisco (i.e., Investigation; Innovative Aftercare; Supply Chain, Healthcare, and Faith Communities in Action*).   Academy participants choose three (from five) course tracks and attend one track each day.

This primer is designed to help you create practical, first steps to abolish human trafficking and modern-day slavery in your everyday lives and to lay the foundation for what you will experience at a deeper- and more technical-level at the San Francisco Academy.  As such, it is highly recommended (although not required) that you participate in a three-day “Backyard Academy” before you register for the one-week Academy in San Francisco.  At the conclusion of the three-day Academy, successful participants receive a “Certificate of Completion”.

*Exact course offerings are subject to number of registered attendees and are subject to change at any time.
