About/Resume

spacer “You can’t start a fire worrying about your little world falling apart,” Bruce Springsteen

Hey all,

Who am I? Career-wise, I’m a broadcaster and aspiring author who is trying to use his limited influence to make Buffalo work for its people despite a great deal of stale status quo forcing friends and family out of town.

Play-by-play and color analysis is my passion, especially in ice hockey. I’ve handled the reigns for Niagara University, Canisius and R.I.T. ice hockey, Buffalo Flash professional soccer as well as a lot of work at my beloved alma mater: University at Buffalo football, basketball and soccer are on my record. I’ve also done a lot of TV broadcasting through Time Warner Cable Sportsnet and done a massive amount of freelance writing and reporting for various newspapers and radio stations.

Personally, I have a lot of interests. I’m happily married to my best friend. We live in the Town of Tonawanda with a hound dog named Ernie Banks and a baby on the way this Fall. I’m very proud of my family, both the folks who I grew up with in the Northtowns and the ones I added in South Buffalo through marriage.

I really like sports, especially playing iced hockey and grassed soccer. I co-own a minor league soccer team in the National Premier Soccer League called FC Buffalo. I like rock and roll music and all kinds of film. I enjoy growing a nice beard and enjoying good scotch. I’m a vegetarian and I’m Catholic. I think you’d love my friends.

Here’s what fancy people have said about me:

“Who is Nick Mendola?” — from Buffalo Rising (June 2, 2010)

“Sports Radio Dynamics” — from Artvoice (April 28, 2010)

“Get To Know a Buffalonian…” — from Artvoice (June 17, 2010)

“Mendola Leaving WGR for WECK” — from the Buffalo News (April 21, 2010)

“Buffalo Foodies… Nick Mendola” — Buffalo Eats (November 25, 2009)

“The BSD Interview with Nick Mendola” — Buffalo Sports Daily (April 19, 2011)

Thanks for caring, and contact me anytime,

Nick

Nick you sooo ROCK it. I am amazed with Tuco’s music. I’d love to jam to you live someday.
I am proud to be your cousin. I read some of your entries, loved the most recent one on your reflection on being a father. Very good writing. Then I began to glaze over with all of the sports stuff since that’s what we chicas do when it comes to too much information dealing with sports.
    keep up the good work.
    love from steamy florida!

Love the website…will pass it on. I got your email when you went to WECK.

    Two things:
    1. Tuco….is that the same Tuco (Eli Wallach) in the movie “The Good, the Bad & the Ugly”?

    2. On your poll regarding intriguing players….I gotta hip you to this one:
7th rounder OT Kyle Calloway from Iowa…..sleeper with a great story. On same line as Bryan Bulaga…some say better than him….was rated in all the draft mags as better than draftee OT Wang. Why did he drop? He got a DWI while riding a moped! Try to visualize this one….340 pounder, 6’6″ tipsy on a moped….this dude is my hero….I will root for him….and some day I hope to buy him a beer.
    Best Regards

    Nick,

Saw your tweet about looking for creative, motivated people and I instantly become interested. Would love to know what you’re thinking or looking for. I live in Buffalo, work in Grand Island. Used to do PR for Delaware North Companies now am a Communications Manager for Cannon Design. I have free time and love sports, humor, hard work and love listening to your show.

Would love to connect with you. I’ve written for Olean Times Herald, Buffalo Business First, PGATour.com, BuffaloGolfer.com, my college newspapers, etc. I actually won the rookie contest last you for WGR and had a decent time during the season but didn’t feel I got much direction or time.

Anyway. If you’re looking for a young guy who loves sports, works hard and can write…shoot me an e-mail.

    Hey Nick,

Haven’t heard from you since your visit to The Stadium Wall. How’d the visit with Luke Russert go?

I’d asked you to ask him about the ESPN article: sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3533730 and was wondering if he commented on some degree of public ownership of the Bills.

I’m looking around for podcasts of the show…appreciate if you could help me.

    Nick,

Best move Weck ever made was to steal you from WGR. I hate that station. I thought you were the best talent they had. I only listen to you and Brad now. Keep up the good work.

    Nick,
Met you when you were a Haz Benz. No,not when you worked for those has beens @ WGR,when you played for Bill Shaflucas’ soccer team.Always liked your work and thought you were one of the few who knew what he was talking about, had the facts, before he spoke. You brought some class to a somewhat class-less station.Like your work @ WECK and will be able to listen more this fall(although the Yanks look like they’ll go deep into October).Best of luck on the new addition to the Mendola clan and your work @ WECK.Let’s hope Spiller will be able to “Thrill” us @ the Ralph this fall. Can’t say much for the Sabres unable to address the offensive problems this off season.Listen to you soon!

    Dear Nick -

I am so sorry to hear about the re-formatting of WECK and the loss of your job.

My first thought was “God, I HOPE GR straightens up and grabs you back!!!! I miss you so much on the station. I love GR and think that you only make it that much better. I fully intended to write them a nastygram for letting you go at the time – but I didn’t know who to send it to and never did.

I know you will do well in anything you do. You have immense talent, creativity, energy and you are just an all-around cool guy who I miss alot.

All the best to you, Lacey and your little guy!!!!!!!

    Fondly,

    Sue Vail
