Mad Quickies 2.10
It’s the Friday Quickies! Surf’s up!
- You’ve seen microscopy competition stills, but here are the 2011 Nikon Small World in Motion winners. The winner is an embryonic ink injection that is astounding. All three winning videos are complete with ancillary information. A real treat!
- Steve Albini cooks. No. Really. Like, on a stove. In a kitchen. And he writes about it! Make yer own Kerosene joke.
- Keep calm and tweet on. Social media propaganda. {via Joseph K}
- Arrivederci, Nello Ferrara, inventor of Atomic FireBalls, Lemonheads, and Black Forest Gummy Bears. Mille grazie. {via Surly Amy}
- Questionable Content. It’s a slice-of-life webcomic by Jeph Jacques, launched wa-a-a-ay back in 2003. {thanks to Todd D}
Lots more. Okay, go!

Amuse-Bouche: Aphrodisiacs + Valentine’s Day
If you’re planning to cook a romantic meal for your Valentine on Tuesday and still need ideas (or just want to ogle some gorgeous food porn), the New York Times Dining & Wine section has a great slideshow of dishes that feature ingredients commonly believed to have aphrodisiac properties (with links to the recipes). Even better, the slides go into the origin and science behind these associations.

“Oh, Internet” is a love song inspired by SOPA. Because, y’know, that’s what you do. And Hanna totally kills it. You need to listen to this…

The Softer Side of Burgess Shale
505 million years ago strange and wonderful creatures filled the seas. Thanks to the evolution of pelagic larvae nearly every wet spot on earth was populated (mostly) by soft bodied invertebrates. The vast majority were filter feeding lay abouts, but some were real up and comers with large, hard bodies and an appetite for their sedentary contemporaries. The undisputed queen of the sea was Anomalocaris, who likely fed on just about everyone.
Anomalocaris means "strange shrimp"

Dorothea Tanning and the Women in the Shadows
Over a decade ago I painted a series of paintings about women artists who were not ever really recognized in their lifetime because they had been married to other famous artists. I was reminded of this project just the other day when I read that Dorothea Tanning, surrealist painter, poet and wife of Max Ernst had passed away at age 101.

AI: What do you do?
It occurs to me that our audience is probably full of artists, at the very least casual ones. I’m curious what all of you do. Are you painters, dancers, writers, interpretive skateboarding mimes?
Are you an artist? Do you create? If so what? If not, make something and then tell us about it.
