Cancer Free Friday: better out than in

I’ve been pootling about bit this week, up to Edinburgh for a day, meetings, shopping. (Not any kind of interesting shopping, just the sort you have to do if you want clean clothes to wear and something more appetising than the fishfingers you had to chip off the back of the freezer for dinner). I’ve been making a lot of phone calls too. And this is what I’ve learned from these apparently disparate, and not very interesting, activities:
It really makes a difference when someone is polite to you.
It really makes a difference when someone makes an effort for you.
I’m not talking about that superficial, ‘how are you today’ parroted by people with ‘customer service’ in their job title the world over, or the whole ‘how beautiful Madam’s eyes look against that scarf’ thing. I’m talking about:
- someone remembering, when you call back about something, what you were calling about in the first place.
- a little chat about where you’re from when someone recognises your accent.
- someone literally going out of their way to collect you and take you to something for the first time, so you don’t have to go on your own.
- someone appreciating what you have done for them, and taking the time to say exactly why what you did meant a lot.
So, this Cancer Free Friday, I invite you to be polite, and make an effort.
I’m not suggesting for a moment that my lovely Bah! readers habitually snarl, grump and are ungrateful. Neither am I recommending that we pretend a cloying gratitude that we don’t feel. I’m proposing that, when we are appreciative, we should say so, however small the thing that we appreciate is. If the experiences of my week are anything to go by, it could make a big difference.
Let me know how it goes!
