(1995) Vincent Cassel, Hubert Kound, Sad Taghmaoui. Dir: Mathieu Kassovitz.

A teen finds a gun after a riot and debates with friends whether to shoot a policeman. Not the Paris you normally see on the big screen. As a portrayal of wayward youths raised in poverty, immersed within social and racial tensions, its insightful, sympathetic, and totally on the button. 20 Million Miles to EarthFebruary 8th 2012 19:26
(1957) William Hopper, Joan Taylor, Frank Puglia, John Zaremba. Dir: Nathan H. Juran.
Review No:499
A spaceship crashes on earth containing an egg which quickly grows into a rampaging creature. A King Kong rip-off with Rome instead of NYC, leading to a decent chase through the coliseum. Harryhausens monster has a good stalking action, but no personality, and the characters are just stereotypes. Fun though. (2007) Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Logan Lerman, Peter Fonda, Ben Foster. Dir: James Mangold.
Review No:498
A poor farmer helps catch an outlaw and agrees to escort him to the prison train. Decent adventure yarn, but hinges on two differing characters affecting each others philosophy. Yet despite his brutalities, Crowes always got a glint in his eye, leaving you in no doubt hes a good un. DDDD IMDB Entry Wikipedia Page Rotten Tomatoes Entry Empire Review 50 Word Film Reviews Index

(1970) Beryl Reid, Flora Robson, John Hamill, Tessa Wyatt, T. P. McKenna. Dir: James Kelley.
Review No:497
A murderous beast is on the loose in the countryside, and two ageing sisters know what it is. Dull cheapo chiller, consisting mainly of two old biddies arguing, broken up by shaky camera killings. At least Reid and Robson are convincing; their dialogues the only thing the script does well. DD IMDB Entry Wikipedia Page Rotten Tomatoes Entry 50 Word Film Reviews Index

(2011) Leonard DiCaprio, Arnie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Judy Dench. Dir: Clint Eastwood.
Review No:496
Biopic of Hoover, his rise and years in power, and his complicated personal relationships. Has material for several films, yet despite 137 min running time, leaves many facets undeveloped. Eastwood doesnt seem to know what hes trying to say about Hoover and his legacy. But retains interest and DeCaprios convincing. (1994) John Cusack, Dianne Weist, Jennifer Tilly, Chazz Palminteri, Joe Viterelli, Jack Warden, Jim Broadbent, Rob Reiner, Tracey Ullman. Dir: Woody Allen.
Review No:495
A playwright reluctantly accepts a gangster's money to stage his play, but then must suffer his girlfriend as his star. Entertaining backstage farce with a great cast and standout turns from Weist and Broadbent. Asides from being laugh-heavy its also a great satire on pretentious artists, their commitment and integrity. (2011) Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Alexandra Roach,
Harry Lloyd, Stuart Heard. Dir: Phyllida Lloyd. Review No:494
Elderly Margaret Thatcher reflects on her rise to power and political career. Makes its case for Thatcher as a formidable, yet human, force to be reckoned with, but her divisive policies remain an awkward elephant in the room. Without Streeps excellent performance, its little more than a daytime TV melodrama. DDDd IMDB Entry Wikipedia Page Rotten Tomatoes Entry Empire Review 50 Word Film Reviews Index

A young analyst discovers his bank is heading for disaster, causing senior staff to panic. Interesting character piece about those behind the financial crisis, people seduced by sums so large even self-hatred cannot stop them from being bought. Cast is strong, though not all of them get chance to shine. DDDD IMDB Entry Wikipedia Page Rotten Tomatoes Entry Empire Review 50 Word Film Reviews Index

Review No:492
When heroic General Martius is rejected by his people, he seeks an alliance with his greatest enemy. Fiennes directorial debut is punchy and captivating, staged smartly in a striking contemporary warzone, allowing its political and social themes seem powerfully relevant. Strong performances all round. DDDDd IMDB Entry Wikipedia Page Rotten Tomatoes Entry Empire Review 50 Word Film Reviews Index
