How We Started

In 2006, at the Charlottesville City Market, Anja Andelic and her family began offering traditional pastries, pies, and breads from their Balkan Peninsula homeland. Thanks to Charlottesville community for all support, in early 2009, the family opened the Balkan Bakery on Water Street, serving traditional Meat Pie (Burek) and Cevapi (grilled minced-meat sandwich), and of course signature baklava with a sip of traditional Bosnian coffee, prepared by boiling finely ground coffee in a small, pear-shaped pot.

We are American and European cuisine-- what I like to call it "Food from the heart with an accent."  We also offer the items from bakery, like the baklava, Mascarpone cake, cookies and baked walnut bread Strudla. But now we are serving lunch Monday through Friday; Dinner Tue thru Saturday, and Brunch on Sunday.

In addition to homemade sausages, kielbasa, panini and salads, we also have full bar with wine, beer and top shelf liquors, including brandy from Serbia.  We carry beers from Croatia, Slovenia, Russia, Bulgeria, Ukraina as well as many local wines (Barbousville, Jefferson, Kings Family, White Hall, Afton).

We are the only restaurant in Charlottesville serving Balkan beers, the only one making their own kielbasas, bread, hamburger patties and our signture beef sausages most traditional of all (Cevapi).

My husband and I love to cook and feed others.  We have gained invaluable experience from our parents which we thank everyday.  We love family, food, drinks, life.  We invite you to celebrate, spare, share, and laugh with us.  Food connects us all thru one unique body part which we all have in common no matter where are you from.  Our bellies!!!

Nothing better then home cooking!
