Firestone Walker §ucaba Releases 1/28

You knew this beer as Abacus.   ZD Wines has a wine called Abacus also.  The winery thinks you are too dumb to know the difference, and sued Firestone Walker for trademark infringement.  They settled out of court, and FW stopped using the Abacus name as of June, 2011.  So that leaves the question – How the hell did they brewery decide on §ucaba?  Imagine Abacus in a mirror.  Backwards it would look pretty much like this  Abacus = §ucabA.  Hopefully ZD doesn’t sue for mirrored trademark infringement.

About the beer:
Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and … Read the rest

Your Hopslam Heads Up: January, 2012

Get ready.  One of the worlds highly prized imperial IPAs makes another appearance in January.

Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repetoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.… Read the rest

Surly Smoke Lager Returns 12/19

Surly Smoke Lager is due out December 19th, 2011.  This smoky porter/lager is a seasonal offering from the Minnesota brewery.

Ebony-hued, Smoke wafts out of the bottle and into your senses, borne on the wings of European traditions, wrapped in American innovation. Alaskan Barleywine 2011 Arrives Today

Alaskan Brewing Barleywine Ale usually hits in January, but this year (2011) it arrives today.    From their Press Release:

“One of my favorite things about our barley wine is that it is great when enjoyed fresh,” says Alaskan Quality Assurance Analyst Darin Jensen. “It’s a fresh and dynamic beer that doesn’t need to be ‘laid down’ like some barley wines; you can enjoy it right away.”

But while some like it fresh, the bottling of each vintage of Alaskan Barley Wine also allows individuals to age it to their liking. It is an ideal cellaring beer to collect for vertical tastings as it gains deeper malt complexity, smoothness and more dark fruit flavors over time. “The first bottle release … Read the rest
