Announcing the Winner of Our Wedding Contest on Pinterest! 2
  • By ModCloth

For our first-ever contest on Pinterest, Something ModCloth, Something You, pinners had a chance to create a themed board to inspire our spring 2012 wedding collection. Today, after poring through all 600 entries,  we’re happy to announce that we’ve found a perfect match!

We’d like to congratulate daisiesnpearls, whose Art Deco-inspired board shows exactly how we’d style a spring wedding. Her entry states, “The event I am envisioning takes place at Union Station in Los Angeles, with its Streamline Moderne architecture…While the fashion palette is muted, the floral and tablescape color palette is a bright drawing from the vivid colors of spring.”

Additionally, we’d like to give a shout-out to a few other entries that deserve recognition! If you’re looking for wedding inspiration of your own, think about checking out Annabanana704‘s mint and pink pastels, hurrafordeg‘s  feminine sparkles, or laurenmochny‘s elegant Art Deco-inspired board.

Thanks to everyone who participated! Do you have  ideas for future event we could host on Pinterest? Feel free to share your thoughts — and your Pinterest account — in a comment!

ModCloth Hosts Fashion Writing Workshop for San Francisco Teens! 8
    • By Laura

This month, stylish students from San Francisco area schools are filing into 826 Valencia for ModCloth’s first-ever fashion writing workshop. Yes, you heard us! For four weeks, we’re running an after-school class called Catwalk or Run: Fashion Writing for the Fearless, and are excited to share a peek at what we’ve been up to.

We kicked off our first class by inviting one of our team leads to model a ModCloth outfit for the students to describe, using adjectives we brainstormed together, and since then they’ve tackled stylebook writing, street style, and more.

This year marks the 10th anniversary for 826 Valencia, a nationally renowned non-profit organization co-founded by Dave Eggers and Ninive Calegari when they recognized the need for volunteers to support the public school system. Through a wide range of free-to-the-public programs and one-on-one tutoring for students ages six to eighteen, 826 — as locals call it — is now one of the most successful tutoring programs in the country. Their quirky pirate shop storefront serves as a welcoming gateway to the space, while also satisfying requirements that the inner-city building be used as a retail space.

Vintage Sexism: Thinking About Pink 24

Revlon ad via The Nifty Fifties and Lustre Creme ad via The Society Pages.

My mom sends me care packages every now and then, and they usually include two toothbrushes. One pink, one green. One is meant for me, the other for my boyfriend.

I ask him, “Which toothbrush do you want?”

    He replies, “Pink.”

For our latest stylebook, Girl Meets Glam, we hoped to depict Valentine’s Day style in a kitschy, playful, vintage catalog way. A pink background seemed perfect for that. There’s a whole lotta pink in this stylebook, and we’re glad if you like it! However, we realize that marketing and advertising historically assumed that “pink is for girls,” as each of the ads above state. You may disagree with that statement.

What kinds of messages have vintage ads sent about pink and women? Well, don your favorite color and read on!

    Lauren Moffatt’s Schoolgirl-Chic Fall 2012 Collection 15

    spacer

The artful looks in Lauren Moffatt’s Fall 2012 were created with a prim and proper schoolgirl in mind, so it’s no surprise that the setting of yesterday’s presentation was a pair of classrooms in an old SoHo school building.

Her Fall collection boasted so many of our favorite details, with ladylike silhouettes and pretty Peter Pan collars with a bit of an undone edge. Playful details and a timeless color palette further convinced us that the pieces will be ones we’ll be coveting yearlong. So while we may have a few months until autumn, this fun presentation is already filling our heads with outfit ideas for the back-to-school season…

Meet Katie of Katie’s Pencil Box 14

    spacer

When I stumbled upon Katie’s Pencil Box, I hadn’t heard of the blog before, but I wish I’d been following it for a long time. Her dreamy, color-rich photos of time spent with her family, snapshots of her enchanting home, and peeks at her pretty, classic outfits are the things a girl dreams of when looking for a new blog to read.

In our interview, this Ohio local shares what she loves about her home (she says the state runs through her blood) and tells us about her art. She also shared some exclusive photos with us, including a special peek into her colorful closet. She’s an expecting mommy, and we did our best to pick a namesake dress that she can wear while pregnant, and continue to rock once the baby is born. (She’s challenging herself to style up clothes from her closet while pregnant, rather than wearing maternity styles.) You’ll also want to see which ModCloth items Katie most loves!

Art’s Best Friend: Peter Clark’s Doggone Cute Collages 2

Here at ModCloth, we’re struck silly by a severe case of puppy love, and, judging by his carefully crafted canine collages, UK-based artist Peter Clark is as well! Made of everything from maps to postage stamps, Clark’s collages are not only eco-adoring thanks to their re-purposed materials, they’re pretty much the most ‘paw-dorable’ thing we’ve ever seen!

Show & Tell: Benefit Cosmetics 5

In addition to partnering with us on our latest stylebook, Girl Meets Glam, the gals at Benefit Cosmetics were gracious enough to invite us to their downtown San Francisco office for a behind-the-scenes peek into all the wonderfulness that makes up this quirky and playful makeup brand.

What we found? A cheery and open three-floor office colorfully adorned with a bevy of inspirational images, plenty of smiling and stylish ladies, and lots of gorgeous views of the city.

See more of the snapshots we captured from our visit below!
