Hit or Miss: Wahoo's Tofu Tacos

If you didn't read our first Hit or Miss article reviewing BLT Burger's Falafel Burger in Las Vegas, it's a new feature where VV examines mainstream eating establishments that offer a vegan option or two, thereby either making it a HIT, where us vegans can count on quality options, or a MISS, where we'll never visit again.

The subject of our newest H.O.M. piece is Wahoo's Fish Taco, which despite having the word "fish" in its name, began offering tofu options on their tacos, burritos, bowls, and salads sometime in 2010. With locations in California, Hawaii, Colorado and Texas, there's plenty of places for us vegans to get some tofu in our Mexican food.

Although Wahoo's offers their tofu in basically all of their items, I've never been able to stray from the tacos. Note that on the tacos, you have to ask for no cheese if you want them to be vegan.

Wahoo's describes their tofu as mildly spiced Polynesian style, as it's not super firm, but it works really well in the taco. The tofu is slightly spicy and comes in the taco with lettuce and pico de gallo. I always add a liberal combination of a couple of the various hot sauces Wahoo's carries, which is refreshing compared to the Mexican spots that only have one hot sauce.

Besides having delicious tofu tacos, Wahoo's offers a really good value for under $10. For $7.07 after tax, I got the two taco combo, which comes with a gigantic heap of beans and rice. There's two options for rice and two for beans, and they're all vegan, so eat your heart out. Don't be afraid to ask for extra salsa or hot sauces, the friendly employees are always happy to provide it.

If you can't tell by now, when ranking Wahoo's on the Hit or Miss-o-meter, I give them a big, healthy HIT. If anyone has had anything tofu besides the tacos there, I would love to hear your experience in the comments on this entry.

I saw your post, and tried these tacos last night. I had no idea that Wahoo's offered anything that would be appropriate for vegans. Thanks for sharing! Have you tried Sharky's yet? I'm going to write about them soon. They have a tofu burrito that is to die for!

Ya Kriss, I've been eating Sharky's for years. I used to get the tofu burrito a couple times a week when I lived next door to one in Quail Hill. Never thought of doing a review on it though... haven't had it in a while since there's not one anywhere really close to where I live now. Better get your review up or I might steal it from ya! :)

Hey actually the white rice is made with butter so its definitely not vegan.

Yes, you are right, I should get on that! I started blogging full-force again after stopping for a few months. I re-organized my website and am adding a whole bunch of new stuff.

The tofu burrito is what I get at Sharky's as well. Too bad there isn't one near you, the Quail Hill and Aliso Viejo one see me a lot. :)

I credit your post as the reason I eat at Wahoo's now. I had no idea they had tofu-anything! Tofu tacos, brown rice and black beans makes for a perfect meal.
