UALR values people with disabilities as an integral part of our diverse campus community. We are committed to the creation of usable, equitable, inclusive and welcoming learning environments. This site brings together resources that help us make that commitment a reality. We encourage members of the campus community to take an active role in creating a campus that reflects these values.

Assistive Technology

The Disability Resource Center (DRC), in collaboration with the Department of Computing Services, has strategically placed various types of assistive technologies, including both hardware and software, in computer labs across campus. To learn more about assistive technology on campus, contact the Disability Resource Center. To learn more about the Assistive Technology Lab, please contact Frances Middleton.

Chancellor’s Committee on the Americans with Disabilities Act (CADA)

UALR’s dedication to providing a quality, accessible education to students with disabilities is perhaps best evidenced by the ADA Committee that the Chancellor has funded for many years. Funds from this committee are spent on creating and maintaining usable, equitable, inclusive and sustainable learning environments, by improving access to both the built environment and UALR’s programs and services. The committee is made up of faculty, staff, and students at UALR. If you are interested in serving on this committee, contact the DRC Director at 501.569.3143 (voice/tty).

Campus Publications

UALR is committed to ensuring that communications are effective and usable by all people. All print materials, therefore, should be made available in alternate formats upon request. To request alternate formats of UALR publications, contact the department that created the original document. If contact information is not available, you may also contact the DRC at 501.569.3143 (voice/tty).

To UALR faculty and staff: All printed materials should include the following statement:

This document is available in alternative formats upon request by contacting (name, campus department) at (phone number and email). An electronic version is available online: (Website address here).

Event Accessibility

UALR values the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of the campus experience. If you anticipate barriers to your full participation in the program or event, please contact the department sponsoring the event for further information or to request an accommodation.

To event planners: University personnel have a responsibility to plan events and programs in ways that maximize accessibility. Occasionally, however, accommodations may still be needed. The following statement should be included on promotional materials announcing public events.

UALR values the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of the campus experience. If you are a person with a disability and anticipate barriers to your full participation in this program or event, please contact (name, sponsoring department) at (phone and email). Please notify the department by _____ (date) to request a sign language interpreter at the event.

Faculty and Staff with Disabilities

UALR recognizes that people learn and work differently, which at times may result in a request by staff, faculty or student-employees with disabilities for an adjustment to their employment responsibilities or work environment so job performance can seamlessly continue. UALR wants the process of accommodating student-employees, faculty, and staff with disabilities to be prompt and easy. Department supervisors may use their own discretion to grant the requested adjustment. Supervisors and employees are both welcome to consult with the Department of Human Resource Services as needed. If you have questions about work environment adjustments or accommodations, please contact Karen Baker in the Department of Human Resource Services at 501.569.3180.

The EEOC and theJob Accommodation Network (JAN) provide helpful information for employees and supervisors.

Faculty and Staff Resources

Resources provided to faculty and staff:

  • Disability statement for Syllabi
  • DRC Faculty Handbook
  • Online courses
  • Various Project PACE, UALR, Law, Education and Internet-based resources

Non-Discrimination Policy

UALR’s Non-Discrimination Policy is in place to prohibit discrimination and harassment based on disability as well as other aspects of diversity. Anyone who believes he or she has been unfairly discriminated against is encouraged to contact Karen Sanders in the Department of Human Resource Services at 501.569.3180 (voice/tty).

Parking

Students, staff and faculty who would like to request accessible parking due to a disability must visit or contact Health Services. To learn more about accessible parking policies, please contact 501.569.3188 (voice/tty).

Prospective Employees with Disabilities

UALR values diversity within every aspect of the campus community, including its employees. We are committed to recruiting and hiring the best applicants regardless of race, color, gender, national origin, age, religion, sexual orientation, veteran’s status, or disability. Therefore, if an applicant encounters a barrier in the application process and needs assistance or an accommodation, he or she should contact Karen Sanders in Human Resources at 501.569.3180 (voice/tty).

Reporting Barriers

Creating and advocating for usable, sustainable, and inclusive learning environments is an on-going process and is a shared responsibility. This barrier report form is offered as one means of reporting barriers that prevent access to facilities and programs. Information about barriers reported through this form will be routed to the appropriate university personnel. Barriers may also be reported by calling the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at 501.569.3143 (voice/tty). Such barriers may include the need for assistive technology in additional locations and inaccessible physical environments.

Safety

The Department of Public Safety provides law enforcement 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flashing blue lights identify emergency phones with direct lines to the Department of Public Safety. The phones appear in numerous locations throughout campus. Officers respond to emergency phones in use, whether or not they hear anyone speaking into the phone.

Escorts can be requested by contacting the Department of Public Safety. An accessible van is also available for emergency situations. Please inform the officer or dispatch coordinator when making the request.

Students with Disabilities

Disability is an aspect of diversity that is integral to our society and to the UALR campus community.
The DRC collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to create usable, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments. However, there may be times when there are aspects of the campus, online environment, instruction or design of courses that result in barriers to inclusion or to accurate assessment of achievement. If this is the case, students should be proactive in working with DRC. To learn more about the DRC, please also visit the DRC website or call 501.569.3143 (voice/tty).

Video Phones

A Sorenson Video Phone is available for deaf or hard of hearing students, faculty or staff to use. It is located in the Donaghey Student Center in room 113. Use is limited to when a staff person is available in that office.

Visitors with Disabilities

UALR values the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of the campus experience. If there are any anticipated barriers which might hinder the enjoyment of a visit to campus, please contact the department or person sponsoring the event for further information or to request an accommodation. Please see the A-Z index for contact information.

Web Accessibility

UALR’s web accessibility policy is in place to ensure that communication on the UALR website is equally effective and usable for people with disabilities as it is for those without disabilities. UALR’s Web Development Team has made every effort to design the UALR website in a way that maximizes accessibility and usability. Comments and suggestions to assist UALR in achieving this objective are welcome and should be directed to Aaron Baker, Web Services Coordinator.
