About Jen Kushell

spacer As the founder and chief evangelist for YSN and the whole young & successful movement, allow me to be the first to thank you for coming to check us out.  It is only through your support, referrals and patronage that we are able to help as many with their careers as we do.  When I tell you what has inspired me to dedicate my life to this cause, I hope you’ll find new inspiration in your own possibilities and add a little more fuel to our efforts as you can.

Over the past 17 years, I’ve traveled one million miles around the world, worked with thousands of people launching and repositioning their careers and been featured in front of hundreds of millions of people in the media.  My greatest inspiration however is seeing the faces of, hearing from and reading about our members and visitors from 200 countries.  (Crazy, right?)

Today I am a writer, author, teacher, speaker, strategic consultant, social entrepreneur, innovator and president of this “interactive media company”, along with co-founder of three other B2B businesses that spun off from this one.

My passion for this business is both relentless and yes, often exhausting, (to me and others!), but endlessly fulfilling.

I understand what it’s like to want to do and be more but not quite know how.  As a teen I struggled to find my own identity and passions.  Finding a purpose, a vehicle to discover and cultivate what made me unique and special set me on a path to try to do great things in this world early on.  Entrepreneurship was my obsession from very early on. Surrounded by entrepreneurs in my family, I started my first little t-shirt business at 13.

By 15 I discovered the business world and started venturing out of my comfort zone.  By 18 I was teaching Junior Achievement for an old teacher of mine who had inspired me.  I spent all my time volunteering and starting organizations and taking on leadership roles in my final years of high school.  By 19, I was in college and jumping out of my skin to start something new.  The frustration of being a young entrepreneur on my fourth start up and still not being taken seriously, drove me crazy, and into action.  The Young Entrepreneurs Network, was the result.

In 1993 we started networking aspiring, emerging and successful young entrepreneurs from around the world.  We had one of the very first online communities on CompuServe then around ’94, set up our first web site and BBS (bulletin board system) on the web and were soon connecting over 10,000 young people together from 12, then 30, then 50, then 75 countries.  One little article in Entrepreneur Magazine exposed us to the world and launched me into the press as a spokesperson of sorts on the emerging generation.  All the exposure, opened up the door to speaking opportunities, then corporate consulting, and eventually books, work with governments and partnerships with huge youth global organizations.

It has certainly been a wild ride and very long road, but I remain committed to using my experience, exposure and connections to help others on as grand of a scale as I can.  But it all starts right here, with you, and your experience on YSN.  So please enjoy and know that you couldn’t have a more passionate person and team committed to your success.

10 Things You Don’t Know About Me

  2. Setting up our first online community on CompuServe required a three-inch stack of reading…which of course we never had the patience for.

  4. My first hosting gig was for Inc. Magazine’s Young Entrepreneur Video
  5. When I did CNN for the first time, they put me in a dark room by myself with a mic and a camera
  6. I really sucked the first time I spoke to an audience of 2000 people
