Dreaming of a Kid-Free Beach Paradise: The Island of Lanai

We LOVE Traveling with Children but even Poshbrood Needs Some Time Alone

A recent weekend sans littles in NYC has got me fantasizing about a return to romantic Hawaii, where we honeymooned.

Many years, three kids, several pounds and one muffin top ago, my new husband and I spent our blissful romantic honeymoon on Lanai, an exclusive island to the West of Maui. Away from the crowds, the intimate island is a romantic and tranquil getaway. Neither of us had ever been to Hawaii (we got married in Colorado in August) and our brilliant Virtuoso travel agent suggested Lanai for his beauty, beaches and seclusion. The fact that it is also home to two amazing and completely different Four Seasons Resorts sealed the deal.

We decided on Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay on Hulopoe Bay, which is the south side of the island. spacer Hulopoe Bay has been repeatedly named as one of America’s best beaches and we wanted to swim, beach, read books, cocktail and luxuriate in being husband and wife. It was perfect. The beach is gorgeous and perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

Manele Bay borders a marine preserve that teems with colorful reef fish and protected species such as green sea turtles and spinner dolphins. For an East Coaster who had never been to Hawaii, the natural paradise was unlike anything we had ever seen.

Our week was spent sleeping in, enjoying long breakfasts, indulging in a couples’ massage at the spa, lounging on the beach or at the pool and having evening cocktails on our balcony overlooking the ocean. One day we went on a exploratory hike on a landscape that looked like the moon, another day we had a private picnic lunch on a secluded beach. spacer

One day we explored the Four Seasons’ sister property The Lodge at Koele 10 minutes up the road. It is a completely different environment: lush, jungle-like with gorgeous gardens and ocean views. spacer At the Lodge we went horseback riding we then changed and enjoyed dinner at the Lodge's award winning restaurant, The Dining Room. Our honeymoon was the ultimate romantic escape.

Several years later, my husband and I still agree that our honeymoon was about as perfect as could be. I'm a planner, and am already thinking about where we should go for our 15th wedding anniversary in a couple of years. I'm thinking a return to Lanai. And if I begin my diet now, I just may be able to rock a bikini once again in Hawaii.
