Checking Out Ad Class

Advertising 101 : You’ve Screwed Up if You’re Here

Posted on by drew

I’m not here to talk about the advertisements below created for Accenture. I’m bringing to you my favorite source of advertising news on the planet.

Copyranter is that source, and while he’s the best source you’ll find you certainly don’t want your glossy 8.5 by 11 creative execution that you and your team busted ass for to show up on his blog.

He’s a copywriter with 18 years experience and I’d say 17 years of loathe for the world.

So enough, either check out Copyranter or don’t. Here’s what he had to say about these two Accenture ads.

“If you spend any time in airports, you’ve seen Accenture’s animal kingdom metaphor campaign (the follow-up work to the killed—because of out of wedlock fuckplosion—Tiger Woods endorsement ads).

Accenture with 236,000 employees in 120 countries, is the largest business consultant firm in the world. Their fees are fucking gargantuan.

So you’d think they’d know a thing or two, and show that they know a thing or two in their ads. No.

You get shown something that they don’t do (L), or you get shown something that means nothing. “Today’s challenges are different”—no fucking shit, shitheads.

Advertising 101 : Stick to the Strat

What’s above is a pretty video for Wrangler, but in my opinion that’s about all it is.

Arno Salters shot the new “Get your edge back” campaign that Wrangler’s clearly trying to use in order to draw in some of the hip in-crowd.

My beef is that this video, after all the beautiful shots and edits and casting calls and post-production, there’s really nothing to take away from this or any one phrase that makes me wish that I owned a pair of Wranglers, the jeans my dad pairs with his grass-stained New Balances to wash the car.

There’s no developed idea. Making things look cool is awesome, in fact everything should look cool! When it comes to this advertising thing though, you know selling a product to the masses and better yet a specific mass, well then you’re going to need to know some crucial basics.

Neat video, still white-wash dad jeans.

Untitled from mike l perry on Vimeo.

Made this for class. Second ever animation I’ve done. I don’t know why it’s all pixelated and shit but oh well. Just a trial run. Let me know what you think and even some criticism.

Advertising 101 : Just Skate Better

I’m sitting in Saxbys you know playing on the internet, having a cup of the good stuff to cure my hangover. I can feel diarrhea urging the final stretch of my, well let’s not get into this.

Imagine, all of that going on and all of the sudden I stumble upon this shit Heineken ad that they hope will go viral or some shit.

I had to watch it without sound too, just imagine how shitty my first impression was. Make sure you fucking hashtag #serenade on fucking twitter until valentine’s day!

We need to follow this shit up immediately with something like a redeemer. Hell maybe even two redeemers.

Here’s an effective condom advertisement.

I know, that Heineken hell is still in the back of your head. Let’s push it out.

Advertising 101 : Cast Matthew Broderick

Some word has been going around the interwebs, a little rumor that Ferris Bueller is going to be representing Honda during the Super Bowl.

It’s true, sorry to spoil this one but here’s the extended “trailer”.

It’s clearly going to be shortened for the Super Bowl’s prestigious commercial time, and hopefully spruced up a bit.

I’m expecting greatness.

Advertising 101 : What?

These two spots were created by Jérôme Genevray. I’m sure you only watched them because the teaser shot is a pair of tits and a snoozing babe.

Where do you live that has such an inner apartment mosquito problem?

This is the lesson today. When you’re selling bug spray, bring in some boobs and a situation that makes absolutely no sense. Then it won’t be effective. Perfect, cut and finished.

Advertising 101 : Make Their Heart Melt

Wimpy Burger is a British chain that is everywhere the British have been.

“Wimpy wanted to let visually impaired people know that they offered braille menus in all of their restaurants. To spread the word we built braille burgers that blind people could actually read. With the help of skilled chefs we took sesame seeds and meticulously placed them on burger buns so that the seeds formed braille.”

I’m amazed not only at that cook’s diligence but also at the overall creative and conceptual thinking of Wes Phelan, the creative who directed this campaign.

Braille menu options and let’s just say it, those with disabilities are more than often overlooked.

I’m glad this campaign stepped out there.

Advertising 101: Put the Product Where it Needs to be

I’m not always in agreement with Mercedes Benz nor automotive commercials in general. They tend to boast about competitive offers and fuel economy, or show off an extravagant faux-leather interior and some fake smiles.

I’m not saying this couldn’t be better, but between the shots / animations / and situation that Mercedes portrays, I’d say they’ve captured what we’d hope to prevent with collision prevent assist.

On the contrary or just at complete rando, I’m not sure if you’ve seen this yet but it’s dangerous.
