By installing 14th-ranked San Diego State as a 10-point dog at 16th-ranked UNLV, odds makers are begging for action on the Aztecs. We won’t oblige them. Motivated by a 2-point loss at Wyoming in its last game, and further fueled by a 2-point loss at San Diego State on Jan. 4, UNLV will be ready to run up the score. It is also worth noting that UNLV needs this game to pull even with SDSU in the Mountain West standings (another motivational angle).

The Runnin’ Rebels have been dominant at home to say the least. They are 13-0 on their home floor with 23.2-point average margin of victory. One of these wins came against New Mexico, who is currently tied with them at 5-2 in the MWC, by 15 points. Another came against Colorado State, who crushed San Diego State by 17, by 19 points.

SDSU has overachieved to this point, and with games against UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State remaining, the Aztecs could come back down to earth in a hurry. I expect them to get a harsh dose of reality this afternoon.

The Runnin’ Rebels are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite. Lay the points.

I’m recommending a play on the Raptors plus the points on Friday night. While they haven’t been winning games, Dwane Casey has brought a defensive mindset to Toronto. The Raptors are the 8th best team in the league in FG percentage allowed, holding teams to 42.9% shooting. While they have allowed over 100 points in each of their last 2 games, they were in both games ’til the end, including an OT loss (ATS win) to Washington. Toronto also has a couple of advantages besides playing a decent brand of basketball on the defensive end. They had last night off, while Boston went to OT against the Lakers (we won with L.A.). And if you watched that game, you know that both sides looked like they were playing with postseason intensity. Boston has covered just 5 of their last 18 when playing without rest – and I wouldn’t be surprised if their “A-game” is left at the hotel after crushing the Raptors twice this season. Boston has shown a tendency to play down to their opposition, covering just 9 of their last 28 against teams playing .250-.400 basketball. They’re also on a 7-15 ATS slide as road chalk. I’m recommending a play on the Raptors on Friday night. Thanks! GL! Scott Spreitzer (Accuwager.com)

These are two middle-of-the-pack offenses and Dallas has one of the best defenses in the league and Minnesota has been playing much better in that area. We had this total handicapped in the high 180s so there is definitely a couple points of value here on Friday night. Both teams were off on Friday so both defenses should be ready to go in this one. The Timberwolves under at home has been one of the strongest bets in the NBA this season at 10-5. This team was pretty bad defensively last season but they have improved in that area and with scoring down overall in the NBA in this lockout-shortened season, the bookies have often posted too-high totals for Minnesota home games. We think that is once again the case for Friday. Minnesota has been playing very well recently on D, allowing an average of only 87 PPG in their last three contests. Dallas has a very stout defense and they allow only 91 PPG on the road this year. At the same time, the Mavericks offense scores only 91 PPG on the road this season. These teams met a couple weeks ago and the total went way over the posted number with the final calculating to 195. A close look at that game shows some abnormalities, however. The Timberwolves, who won the game, shot well above their season average from the field and they were lights out from three-point land (43% compared to their 33% this season, and they took a lot of three-point attempts in this game). They also got to the line for a whopping 33 shots and they made 28 of their free throws. As a result of that game the bookies have overadjusted this line (that one closed at 183.5). Since the Mavs were dominated last time we think they really clamp down on defense in this one and we expect the winner here to score around 95 with the loser a couple points back. -Doc’s Sports (Accuwager.com)

The traveling unit from Los Angeles is on an extended six-game road swing, mostly back east. In their last outing against Philadelphia, Kobe Bryant was magnificent in the first-half, only to shoot 2-11 in the second-half, as the Sixers doubled the star, taking away his off-hand reverses. More important, the Lakers because of the travel factor, seem to die at the end of the game allowing the Sixers deep bench with rested starters to overcome an early deficit. Here, the visiting Lakers have been off for a few days, looking to recharge for this stoic battle with a long-time hated foe, the Boston Celtics. We know Boston has been playing their best ball of the year. The last time LA defeated Boston (LY: 92-86) was in 2010 in a situation that echoed Boston’s lockdown defense holding back the Lakers accuracy from the field at 30% in the second-half. Currently, the Celtics lead the league in FG defense, so LA will to compensate by playing slower early to help extend their late energy. If you look at the ATS results for LA, you will find they show at 2-9 ATS as a road puppy. However, the Celtics board at 20-49 ATS off a win of 10 or more points and clearly, have NOT played a winning team within their current 5 game win streak. Take the value-added points! On Thursday the free NCAAB Play is on Manhattan. Game 783 at 7:30 eastern. Manhattan has won and covered 3 of 4 after allowing 80 or more and 3-1 ats vs teams who allow 63 or less points.
