Fitness Quickies

January 15th 2012 14:50
I subscribe to a few health periodicals. Although there might be a slew of information that I already knew, the information that is new to me is a gem under a boulder. I learned, for instance, that you should be careful of your use of vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene supplements because these antioxidants that protect cells against free radicals, may also protect cancer cells. This means that sometimes my information may not have a link.

When losing weight, many of us reach a plateau where we seem we can't lose any more weight. Denise Austin gives a few tips on how to move past this stage. I'm trying to go past this stage at this time. I am watching my portions and pushing myself a bit longer in my activities. I am also trying to change my routine, to a point.

Speaking of portion control and reading the nutrition label, I found that I am getting too much sodium in my diet. Even in healthy foods. I'm on a mission to watch my sodium at all costs. I use very little salt when I make my meals from scratch. I've devised a trick that I am using and I'll use my cottage cheese and salsa mix that I heard about on Dr. Oz.

A serving size of cottage cheese is 1/2 cup. A 16 oz. Container has 4 servings. Sodium per serving is 470 mg. or 20% of your daily value. The salsa has 240 mg. or 10% of your dv. That's 30% sodium in one meal. I have decided to reduce the servings. If I can get 5-7 servings from the cottage cheese, instead of 4, and I get over 20 servings of salsa, instead of the 15 per container, I've cut the sodium. It's a start. Another thing I do is wash can foods, or run water, to reduce the sodium!

I thought I was going to move to an apartment complex with a gym, but that fell through. Since I still want to quit my gym, I am going to purchase what I consider essentials for me. Since I do alot of walking at work, I'll get an indoor bike for my cardio. I have weights, a heart monitor, a kettlebell, and a metal cable chest extender. I am planning on acquiring a couple more kettlebells, a medicine ball, a stability ball, a bench, and get some sort of exercise bands or cables.

According to a UCLA study these are the top ten foods to help you live a longer healthier life:
1) Almonds
2) Apples
3) Blueberries
4) Broccoli
5) Beans
6) Beets
7) Spinach
8) Bananas
9) Sweet Potatoes
10) Wheat Germ

Useful sites that can help you with topics
Reducing salt go here, here, here, and here to name a few.

Home exercise equipment go here and here.

New Year Blah Blah Blah

January 11th 2012 00:46
It's that time again when people make resolutions for the new year. I'm sure getting into shape is up there along with quitting smoking and a host of other doomed to fail wishes. The gym is packed, but veterans know that by March, only the regulars will remain. It is a vicious cycle and I'm not going to sugar coat it.

New Years comes with good intentions that most aren't prepared for. That's why I say start when you're ready and don't use New Years as a starting date. Why we are doomed to fail is because the pressure that is associated with starting on a certain date. We are so gung ho, that we often fall into over training. We get discouraged because the results aren't happening as fast as we like. We often have people discouraging us, especially when we fall off the diet, training, or our trying to quit smoking.

I suggest start being healthy when you are ready and are sure you can do it. The date isn't important because not everyone was born on January 1. You get the analogy.

Everything doesn't work for everyone. You must find what works for you. I quit smoking cold turkey when I was diagnosed with cancer. Would it work for you? I know a few people with cancer that still smoke.

When it comes to losing weight, one must again find what works for them. Some count calories, others eat what they want, others just can't do it. People have to realize that it isn't about dieting, exercising, or even will power. It's about changing your lifestyle. Everything else is a temporary fix.

Start by keeping track of food and exercise. Start at Fitday.

A good weight loss secret is to increase your fiber intake. You still need protein, carbs and good fats, but an increase in fiber can make weight loss easier.

Still to change our lifestyle we have to find a style that works for us. It's impossible to eat every good food every day. So you establish a happy medium. We have Superfoods and more Superfoods to the World's Healthiest Foods, and I can go on.

When assessing your meals, you should base it on foods you will eat everyday, foods, you will alternate, foods you will have a few times a week, and foods that will be on occasion. For example, I have a yogurt everyday. I'll alternate a couple of eggs with an oatmeal recipe that I saw on Dr. Oz. I'll have tuna or salmon or sardines at least three times a week. Occasionally I'll cook up some Baramundi that is rather pricey. I try to snack on seeds and/or nuts everyday.

You have to see what works for you that you can live with. Otherwise it won't work in the long run.

Before you join that gym, make sure you can commit to the terms of the contract. A better deal is to see if you can find gyms without commitment, otherwise if you don't go, the gym still gets your money. You should be prepared to go to the gym at least three times a week to get your money's worth.

I hope to write about essential exercise equipment if you don't want to go to the gym. Many times there are free alternatives, such as gallon jugs of water!

My Best Health Sites

December 11th 2011 13:48
I figured I'd end the year, by giving you sites that are loaded with information and resources on health, nutrition, and exercise. If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, then you'll find something for you.

You can't talk about health without Dr. Oz. The site is loaded with information that compliments the show.

Everyday Health is a site loaded with information and resources. Calorie counter, journal, etc., the site is a health nut's dream!

Medify is a medical research and treatment center. You give it symptoms, it gives you answers.

The Mayo Clinic is packed with information and resources on health, symptoms, and cutting edge technology.

WebMD is another healthy living resource.

I came across the next one accidentally on TV, Alive and Well can teach you about the modern organic and healthy lifestyle.

The Health Guru can teach you about health with videos.

Healthy Lifestyle Truth is loaded with information.

I could go on with sites about health, but I will conclude with y50 ideas for a healthy lifestyle that take less than 10 minutes!

The Virus AAV2

November 28th 2011 23:48
We may be on the threshold of the greatest discovery in medical science. It is a small and simple virus dubbed AAV2. It is special because in a laboratory it is found to kill cancer in mice.

More research is needed and approval for use may be years away. Still this discovery may lead to a total defeat of cancer in my lifetime!

Workout on the Cheap!

November 5th 2011 12:41
I've been going to the gym on a steady basis since 2006. I changed gyms to get a better rate and save some money. I use the gym mostly for weight training because I get most of my aerobics at work with a lot of walking.

I've written about ways to workout without a gym, but this article, gives great ideas.

Fountain of Youth

August 7th 2011 12:38
If you follow Dr. Oz's teachings, you know how he is revolutionizing the way we look at health. He keeps us up with various health threats and how we can even fight cancer through nutrition and diet.

Now he is showing us the secrets to longevity. He's done this study on his show before by going to places where people easily live over 95 years of age, and studying why. Their diets and daily routines were studied along with other factors

Proven Cancer Fighter

July 30th 2011 20:18
Sulforaphane targets cancer cells while it leaves normal cells alone. Sulforaphane is found in cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc.

I believe I already mentioned broccoli as a cancer fighter elsewhere. When Dr. Oz appeared in Newsweek, an article revealed that a tomato and broccoli combination is the ultimate cancer fighter. Dr. Oz also revealed this on his show. They also mentioned blueberries and spinich as foods you should have on a daily basis
