Bio-M-Bios Concord, NC

September 1st 2008 01:35
My husband and I went to Bio-M-Bios on Friday night for a date night. Bio-M-Bios is a Mexican restaurant located off Poplar Tent Road in Concord, NC. The restaurant is upscale Mexican food. We had fajitas for two and it was $22 for the fajitas. Most of the items on the menu were $12-$24 each. We also ordered a margarita. The prices were not listed on the menu so I figured maybe $5 or $6 at the most. I was wrong...mine was $10 (yes a whopping $10 for a drink) and my husband's was $7. There was a band playing old seventies style beach music which I thought a bit odd for a Mexican restaurant but the bar area was crowded and it seemed a popular band. Friendly wait staff, good food, nice place. However, the music was so loud that we seriously could hardly hear each other. I did think the prices were a little bit high, especially the drinks. Would I go back, maybe if I were looking for something a little upscale but not a place I will frequent on a routine basis. Would I order the drinks, a big loud no!

Natalie's Coffee and Tea

August 19th 2008 02:53
Natalie's Coffee and Tea is a family owned company located in Derry, NH. I discovered the place by accident while looking for flavored gourmet coffee on Ebay one day. I was very surprised to see that they offered a ton of flavors in decaf and regular which is hard to find. I ordered a sample decaf flavored pack that allowed me to choose flavors such as blueberry, mexacali creme, german chocolate, chocolate raspberry, rainforest nut crunch...and a ton more!

When the coffee arrived a mere three days later packaged beautifully in air tight gold bags, I could not believe how great they looked and smelled. I could smell the coffee before I even opened the bag. And when I made it, it lived up to the hype. It was and stilll is the best coffee I have ever had. Trust me when I say that because I have been drinking coffee since I was six years old (I know, bad parents! No wonder my doctor finally made me quit having caffeine and I am only 36 years old!). So I was pleased to find decaf good coffee that was not only affordable, it could be shipped to my door in a matter of days. I highly urge you to buy some. You too will become a repeat and loyal customer. I think they have surpassed Starbucks in my opinion as for as price and taste. Starbucks is still great for me to go into the store, but Natalies is perfect for ordering and always having it at home.

Starbucks Closing 600 Stores

July 27th 2008 13:57

I saw on the news about two weeks ago that Starbucks would be closing roughly 600 stores. This was upsetting to say the least because I am a die hard Starbucks girl. To make matters worse, I found out one of the Starbucks across the street from where I work at is closing. Horrible! Granted, this store is particularly hard to get to because of the traffic but still, a Starbucks closing is like someone I love moving away. I will miss them. There is another store about ten minutes from where I work at that is my favorite one to go to. The people are always so nice and chatty. If this one closes, I will be crushed! I may have to call in sick and find another one to go to.

I have to admit, I have cut down on the amount of lattes I am getting from Starbucks as it is hard to justify spending $4.27 for one large cup of coffee. That is a little over a gallon of gas for me. I also do love the smaller individual owned stores that you find popping up as an alternative to some of the larger chain coffee places. I have found a few close to where I live that are pretty competitive with Starbucks in taste and are cheaper for a latte or cup of coffee. Possibly some of these smaller stores may see some more business come their way. Always someone profiting from someone else's loss.

Concord Diner, Concord, NC

July 20th 2008 21:09
I gotta admitI really wanted to like it but just could not. The atmosphere of the restaurant is like a comfortable biker place, really laid back, crossed with an old fashioned restaurant. Black and white pictures of old movie stars covered the walls and the Harley-Davidson sign greeted you at the front door. I really wanted to like it for that reason alone. Unfortunately, it just did not happen. We asked to sit in the non-smoking section but even sitting there, the smoke just sort of covered you. When we left, I smelled like I had been sitting in a bar all night. I ordered bacon and cheddar cheese omelet which sounded good but came out flat and scorched and tasted very bland, just like burned eggs. My son ordered a patty melt and fries. The sandwich was huge and served on big pieces of Texas Toast with cheese and onions. I took a bite and tasted burned bread and grease pouring out of the onions. The fries tasted like Ore-Ida fries. I am thinking I coulda and shoulda made this dinner at home minus the burned everything. Oh well, live and learn. On to the next undiscovered place.

What-A-Burger Concord, NC

July 19th 2008 21:53
My son had been dying to go to Whataburger to get some Cherry Lemon Sundrop that his teachers raved about. Whataburger in Concord, NC is not affiliated with the national chain. From what I understand, it used to be part of a regional chain in NC. In any event, the decor is similar to an old-fashioned burger joint. As soon as you go in, you have to watch your step. And I do mean literally watch your step. The door step is about six inches off from the curb when you go in and there is a big sign as big as day ( I saw this on the way out) that says Watch your step. I obviously failed to see that sign and tripped over the step falling into the restaurant.nothing like making an entrance.

The food was greatbig burgers on a big bun with all the trimmings, thick cut French fries served in a paper tray covered in wax paperjust like my dad always served them. I had a grilled chicken salad complete with home made Ranch dressingtalk about goodness! Large servings, fast service and affordable prices.butI found out after giving her my order that this was a cash only place. They do not take debit/credit cardsI could not believe such a place existedhow could somewhere possibly run a restaurant on a cash only basis? So after I gave my order and the lady said they could not take cards, I explained to her I did not have any cash on me. She promptly directed me to the ATM sitting inside the restaurantgo figure. So, I took out money from the ATM which of course was not one from my bank and got hit with a $2.50 service charge from the ATM and then got hit with a $2.50 service charge from my bank for using a foreign ATM. Immediately added on $5 to the cost of our dinnernot very happy about that

Dopey's Newberry, SC

July 19th 2008 21:48
My father owned a restaurant in Newberry, SC, and ran it along with my brother. I had to put this in food worth mentioning. My father ran Dopeys also known as the Tomahawk at Newberry College for more than five decades and was open late at night to serve the college crowd at Newberry College, along with local Newberry residents. His restaurant can be found on the internet under several places including Wikipedia and Newberry College. My fathers burgers and french fries gave me my freshman fifteen. I spent many late nights after college parties getting a burger cut in half and laughing with my friends. Granted my fathers place was a hole in the wall and the decor bordered on eccentric and a fifties style theme complete with a juke box (Fonzie could have walked in and been right at home)My father passed away on April 7, 2008 and my brother Buzzy is now running Dopeys. The last time I visited his restaurant for a farewell hamburger and to remember my dad, I swear it was like I could still see my father sitting up on his stool behind the register asking customers if they wanted to put it on their tab. Heres to good burgers and good times.

For the Love of Good Food

July 19th 2008 21:44
And so the search beginsafter moving to Concord, NC, and trying to find a really good restaurant, I soon realized I had my work cut for me. I cant tell you how many times my family and I have decided to go for a night out only to sit there for the next hour trying to figure outhmmmwhere do we go? As a result, I have decided to pursue my right to find that perfect restaurant, that coffee shop that makes you want to come back for more, that date night restaurant that my husband and I call our special place, that hole in the wall place where they know your name and you love the band, that cafe that you love to sit outside and feel the breeze while enjoying a cup of soup and a sandwich, that greasy spot that makes the best hamburgers in town, that eclectic bistro with that great new artists paintings on the walls and the best mixed drinks, the biker spot that has the coldest beer on tap and the best wings to boot, that farmers market stand that has the best strawberries, that classic upscale restaurant where the wine tastes rich and flavorful and the steaks are thick and juicy.that perfect place that I can call my own.

A little about me, I grew up near Charleston, SC, and am a fan of low country southern food. I also lived in Newberry, SC for the majority of my life before moving to North Carolina. In Newberry, my father owned a small hamburger joint, which made me appreciate a good thick burger all the way, cut in half. The restaurant was named Dopeys. Dopey served some really good greasy cholesterol clogging food. I still love to go to different restaurants, love to sample new foods and attempt to cook many different things. I have my B.A. from Newberry College. I have varied interests including learning to cook new foods, painting, drawing and writing
