New Kicks and Whatcha Reading Weekend

Happy Friday, everyone!

So how was everyone’s week?  Mine’s been good, except I haven’t been feeling 100%.  I don’t think it’s a cold … I think it may be related to the dry air?  It feels like allergy symptoms, but you don’t hear about winter allergies too often.  Anyone else experience this problem?

Anyway, I’m definitely glad it’s the weekend.  We’re going to a wedding tomorrow, which I’m really excited about.  I always love weddings.  The cake, the dancing, the food, the cake … oh yeah, and celebrating our friends’ very special day. spacer

So let’s talk about what I’ve been reading this week! spacer

1. I finished the “Hunger Games” series.  I absolutely loved it.  I enjoyed the first two books more than the third, but I also thought the series ended well.  Now I can’t wait to see the movie.  Hollywood, don’t spoil it for me.  You better get this one right!

2. Lindsay at The Lean Green Bean wrote an amazing post about blogging.  If you blog, you can completely relate to this post.  And if you don’t blog, it gives you an idea of how challenging (but fun!) it can be!

3. To stay on the blogging theme … my girl Brittany posted a hilarious video that’s going around, regarding things healthy living bloggers do and say.  I think there may be a little bad language in it, but I gotta say that it’s pretty funny (and frighteningly true!).

4. Amy at fearless homemaker posted a recipe for some incredibly delicious-looking cake batter truffles!  Anyone else love cake batter as much as I do??

5. My SIL, Christi (who also writes a great blog!) shared with me a post she had read about putting family first.  I thought it was very well-written, and the writer made some really fantastic points about why we need to keep our family as our top priority!

One last thing before I say good-bye for the weekend! spacer

Remember how I’ve been boo-hooing about my shin splints (see posts here and here)?

Well after getting advice from all of you and taking three weeks off from running, I went to another running store this week to get fitted for new shoes.

The store was called Up & Running.  If anyone lives in the Dayton/Troy area, I would definitely recommend it.  I explained all of the frustrations I’ve been having, and the girls helping me were very patient and understanding.  They were also knowledgeable, and they took a lot of time looking at my feet (which wasn’t awkward at all spacer ) and doing some calculations to figure out what kind of arch I have and what size shoe would be best.

I was told I have higher arches, but not super-high.  The girl helping me believed that I needed a shoe with a mild to moderate amount of support.  I tried on a bunch of different pairs and eventually settled on these:

The Brooks Ravenna 2.

They didn’t end up having my size at the Troy store location, so they had to send them over from their other store … which worked out well, because it gave me a chance to go home and look at reviews of the shoes before actually purchasing them.

The reviews were all incredibly positive, which gave me more confidence in my purchase!

spacer

I also ended buying a pair of Superfeet insoles, thanks to a suggestion from Cinnamon!

spacer

I was very excited to try the new kicks out at the gym.  I ended up running 3 miles the first day … just to build back up slowly after taking some time off.  And I felt great the entire time!! It was only my first run, of course, so we’ll see how things go over the next couple of weeks.  If I’m not satisfied, I am able to return the shoes within 2 weeks.  But I’m really hopeful that my horrible shin splints may be a thing of the past!!  Fingers (and toes!) crossed! spacer

Question for ya …

What are you up to this weekend?

Any fun blog posts that you’ve been reading?  Any new books?

For those training for races … how’s it coming??

Thanks for the link up, girlie spacer

And that’s great news about your running! The thing about shin splints is that they’re different for everyone. For some people they go away within a week, and others it takes a looonggg time. I’m so glad that you were one of the shorter cases– and Brooks are a great brand too!

    Have an awesome wedding-weekend spacer

I HOPE I’m one of the shorter cases … I’m not getting too excited until I’ve had a few runs with no problems!! Have a great weekend!

Weddings are so much fun! This weekend my main plan is to sleep past 4:50 a.m. spacer On Saturday we have my cousin’s second birthday party, and then Sunday is open house at school. Hopefully a workout will find its way in there too.

I hope your shin splints are gone forever!

so glad you find some new shoes that will hopefully help you out!! I remember having shin splints in highschool my freshman year. I literally had them ALL soccer season. I could barely run, but my coaches STILL made us do 3 mile runs before each practice. I had to tape my legs like crazy just to be able to get on the field and play. NOT a good time!

I have yet to see any movie in 3D! I mean, I’ve seen 3D things at theme parks, but never since it’s become popular in the theater! Hope you enjoy!
