Hassan Rahim is a Los Angeles-based art director, designer and  researcher and is currently art director for a contemporary art and fashion publication Thvm Rag. The through line in all Rahim’s design work is that it’s conceptual and artistic. Self-taught, but surely not lacking in talent, Rahim has had done client work through several different mediums. His work ranges from cover artwork for Parasite Paradise and Superhumanoids, lookbook design for fashion brands Doppelganger and Orthodox, book design for Vevey Forever (which is a book about Maroon 5′s experiences while recording an album in Vevey, Switzerland), and editorial and art direction for clothing brand Warriors of Radness.

At Proxart, we’re interested in understanding how certain creative’s environment affect his or her work. First off, where were you born and raised?

I was born in Fountain Valley, Calif., and raised throughout Orange County. I moved to L.A. when I was 18.

You told me you’re living in downtown Los Angeles. How has the city affected you and your work?

It’s great because it’s a developing area with lots of artist-types moving into the neighborhood. I live in Little Tokyo / Arts District, adjacent to SCI-Arc. The area doesn’t necessarily affect my work but it’s nice to be a bike ride away from a lot of the people I work with.

You do a good amount of design, branding and art direction for several brands, companies, musicians, etc. Which brand/company has been your favorite to work with? 

Definitely Thvm Rag. It’s a collective of artists all contributing toward every aspect of the project. Everyone is extremely easy-going and I seem to find the most creativity working with Thvm Rag.

What’s your process like? Do you work quickly? At what times are you most creative? I have a feeling you work nine-to-fives quite often. 

Sometimes I work quickly, but if it’s something I’m putting love into it can take forever. I have been freelance for almost five months now and get the most amount of work done from about 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Nine-to-fives are not my cup of tea and never have been. If there’s anything I learned in the past year, it’s to live by your own rules.
