AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "AUNT LYDIA'S" HEAVY RUG YARN
3 - 70 yd. skeins Red
2 - 70 yd. skeins White
1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 9 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW
GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch
Directions are given for Small to Medium Size. Large Size is given in parentheses.
With Red cast on 46 (50) sts. 1st ROW: P 23 (25) sts, place a marker, P across remaining sts. NEXT ROW: * K 1, inc 1 st in next st, repeat from * once, K to within 4 sts of marker, inc 1 st in each of the next 8 sts (4 sts before and 4 sts after marker), K to within last 4 sts, * inc 1 st in next st, K 1, repeat from * once - 58 (62) sts. NEXT ROW: P across row. NEXT ROW: Repeat inc row inc 4 (6) sts each side of marker and 2 sts at beg and end of row - 70 (78) sts. NEXT ROW: P across row. NEXT ROW: K across row, drop Red. START PATTERN: NEXT 2 ROWS: Attach White, K across, drop White. This completes the sole section. 3rd PATTERN ROW: Pick up Red, K across. 4th PATTERN ROW: K 2, * yarn in front, sl 2 as if to P, K 6, repeat from * across row ending last repeat with K 2. 5th PATTERN ROW: K 2, * yarn in back, sl 2 as if to P, K 6, repeat from * across row ending with K 2. 6th PATTERN ROW: Repeat 4th row, drop Red. 7th PATTERN ROW: Pick up White, K across row always slipping the 2 sl sts. 8th PATTERN ROW: P across row always slipping the 2 sl sts. 9th and 10th PATTERN ROWS: Repeat 7th and 8th rows, drop White. 11th PATTERN ROW: Same as 3rd row. 12th PATTERN ROW: K 6, * yarn in front, sl 2 as if to P, K 6, repeat from * across row. 13th PATTERN ROW: K 6, * yarn in back, sl 2 as if to P, K 6, repeat from * across row. 14th PATTERN ROW: Repeat 12th row, drop Red. NEXT 4 ROWS: Pick up White and repeat 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th rows. NEXT ROW: Starting with 3rd pattern row, work in pattern across row. NEXT ROW: Work across 19 sts for both sizes, bind off 8 sts, place last st back on left needle, K 2 tog 8 (12) times binding off each st, then bind off next 8 sts, sl 1, K 6, sl 2, continue in pattern across row. UPPER SECTION: Work in pattern across all 38 sts until there are 6 Red and 6 White stripes from beg. of upper section then K 4 rows in Red, bind off.
FINISHING: With matching color sew bound off edge at instep matching sts on wrong side of work. Sew bottom of sole in same manner. Sew back seam with matching color.
TASSELS: Make 2. Wind Red 18 times over a 4 inch cardboard. Tie one end, slip off cardboard. Wind White 4 times around tassel about ¾ inch from 1st tying, tie and fasten ends, trim. Cut other end and trim evenly. Fasten to top of boot at back seam.
