Frogs Gone Fishin’ plays Saturday at the Bear River Bar & Grill, while members of the band will play in other side projects next week: The Olora Brothers play next Wednesday at Carl’s Tavern and the Sessh plays next Wednesday and Thursday at the Tugboat Grill & Pub.

Steamboat Springs — In the next week, three different bands will play three different venues on three different nights.

But they all have something in common: They’re all members of the Frogs family.

Frogs Gone Fishin’, the flagship band, plays at Bear River Bar & Grill on Saturday after playing Old Town Pub on Friday.

Frogs guitarist and vocalist Andrew Portwood will play with his roots bluegrass project the Olora Brothers on Wednesday, and Frogs guitarist Trevor Jones will return Wednesday to play a two-night run with his electronic-funk project The Sessh.

“I view all of these bands as part of the Frogs family,” Jones said Friday evening at Old Town Pub. “We’re all friends, we all play together, and these projects are going to keep popping up.”

Frogs Gone Fishin’

Jam rockers Frogs Gone Fishin’ have their roots in 2006 when Jones was evacuated from New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. He found himself on Portwood’s couch in Nashville, Tenn., and music became their focus.

The pair had gone to high school together in Denver and have been playing music together for more than a decade, their vocal and guitar abilities complementing each other.

At the Steamboat shows this weekend, the band is rounded out by semipermanent drummer Jeff Jani and new bassist Alex Scott.

Although it has toured nationally, the band has a deeply rooted following in the Colorado mountains. Although most of the members live in Denver (Portwood lives in the Vail Valley), Jones said the mountains and scenic landscapes align with the spaciousness in the band’s funk and rock jams.

“Improvisation is definitely affected by the environment you’re in,” Scott said. “I definitely play differently in the mountains than I do in a city.”

“The mountains are just pure and majestic,” Jones added.

The Sessh

The Sessh is a power-rock trio featuring Jones, bassist Cristian Basso and drummer Roy Burki.

Incorporating samples and a MIDI, the band fuses experimental rock with the New Orleans influences of Jones and Basso.

“It’s a little more electronic,” Jones said. “It’s more stripped down in terms of membership because there’s only three of us, but the sound is very big.”

Basso uses a MIDI to manipulate the sounds in his bass to produce more than one tone at a time.

At 1 1/2 years old, the band is landing opening sets at some larger Colorado venues, but Jones has to balance that with Frogs and his electronic project, Ape Tit.

“I don’t think of it as a side projects as much as I work on both,” Jones said.

The Olora Brothers

Portwood’s schedule also is full these days. On Friday, he drove from an après ski show in Vail to try and make the Old Town Pub show during a snowstorm.

He plays in the band Andreux & The See of Sounds and the Olora Brothers, who make their Steamboat debut next week at Carl’s Tavern’s Bluegrass Wednesday.

The band comprises Portwood, Sean Healey on acoustic guitar and Braden Rauen on fiddle. Jason Siegel joins the band on bass to round out the quartet for the Steamboat show.

But Portwood said no number of side projects is too much for his plate.

“It’s absolutely wonderful,” he said between gigs Friday. “Being able to play in multiple bands is such a unique experience. Being able to play so many different styles and genres each night … it’s a fun thing to bounce off creatively with Frogs.”
