spacer Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

6pm.com has some great sales on L.A.M.B. and Elizabeth & James shoes and bags.  There are a lot of steep discounts (and limited inventory) available, but for my weekend pick I like these simple beige sandals from L.A.M.B.  Personally I always find a Mary Jane-style strap much easier for walking, and I like the super-strappy nature of these for a summer night out.  They were $265, but are now marked to from $135-$185 (available in black, ivory, and “nude,” pictured). - Above the Law talks about the benefits of alcohol for networking events. - Re: Corporette Tech Woes: I think we’ve got the “stack overflow” popup problem that IE7 and IE8 users were having fixed — please let me know if you’re still getting it. I’m going to try to looking into the “posting too quickly” error, which I think is a separate issue. The mobile version of the blog should be up and running again also; please let me know if it isn’t.  Thank you all for your patience and help with this.

Frugal Friday’s TPS Report: Long Sleeve Wool Ruffle Blazer

by Kat on 02/10/2012 · 188 comments

in The Personal Shopper (TPS)

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

spacer I’ve noticed this boiled wool blazer before at Macys.com, and I think with the right outfit it could be really cute — I like the bright color, the almost origami-like ruffles, and the shawl collar. I’d wear it with dark gray pants and (for February) perhaps a super pale pink long-sleeved tee or sweater. The jacket was $89, but is now marked to $59, with an additional 15% off with code LOVE. Coffee Break – Vintage Valise Novelty Kendra E/W Tote

in Coffee Break

spacer I’m always a fan of a colorful bag, and this “beet” Cole Haan tote fits the bill perfectly. (I would call this more of a satchel, but that’s me — I always think of totes as being something bigger!) It’s part of the winter clearance sale going on now at eBags, where almost everything is 20% off plus free shipping, bringing the price from $398 to $318.40. Nice! It’s also available in a more sedate black, as well as a brown. Vintage Valise Novelty Kendra E/W Tote

Update on Tech Troubles, 4:41 PM ET: I’ve removed yet more code… who’s still getting the stack overflow pop-up? Sigh. Thanks, you guys.

Open Thread: Best Magazine Reads?

by Kat on 02/09/2012 · 331 comments

in After-Work Activities, Kat, Lifestyle, Recommended Reading

spacer So here’s something that I’m curious about and thought we’d discuss… what magazines do you guys read on a regular basis?  Do you feel like the Internet has changed the time you spend with a magazine — or is a hot bath or a long flight still not the same without your favorite pile of mags?  Does anyone use the iPad apps? Which magazines do you enjoy the most?

For my own $.02… you’re talking to someone whose major was magazine journalism, so I always have and always will love the medium.  One of my favorite scenes in Working Girl is when Tess describes how her reading two wildly different publications gave her a great idea related to business, and I’ve always tried to take that approach.  I remember in college, going to Barnes and Noble, getting a huge stack of magazines, and sitting down to pore over them.  In my early 20s, when I worked for Family Circle, the editor in chief had me read about 30 magazines a week and flag things of interest to her, either in terms of story ideas for the magazine or things she ought to know generally as the editor of a major magazine. When I left for law school that dwindled to personally reading about 15 a month… and now I’m down to about 5 a month, maybe. I hate recycling unread magazines, and I’m just not in a place anymore where I want to keep large unread piles of magazines anymore, so I keep unsubscribing. (Pictured: Magazine Logos by Jim Parkinson, originally uploaded from FontShop.)  I still subscribe to the following:

Thursday’s TPS Report: Ultimate Double Weave Columnist Pant

by Kat on 02/09/2012 · 260 comments

in The Personal Shopper (TPS)

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

spacer I spied these fun blue trousers a few days ago and have been personally lusting after them — but when I went to the IFB conference yesterday I noticed two or three women wearing this color of pant and looking fabulous. One paired it with a neon yellow sweater, while the others paired it with classic black or white — but it looked pretty hot on everyone. It was daring but classic at the same time, and would be great for a woman who doesn’t mind standing out. This pair is $79 at Express (which offers a matching jacket that I hate, but that’s just my $.02…) Ultimate Double Weave Columnist Pant

Update on Tech Troubles, 9:50 AM ET: Drat; apparently I didn’t fix the stack overflow problem. I’ve turned something else off in the backend; please let me know if that has any effect…  Thanks in advance…
