Modern Aids For Age Old Medical Conditions

Asthma and emphysema are respiratory illness that has afflicted our family for several generations now. My grandfather who passed away when I was still in college was afflicted with emphysema, my father was born with asthma and has been diagnosed with emphysema for about 10 years now, my eldest sister had mild asthma attacks during her childhood. One of my twin daughters succumbed to respiratory distress syndrome while her surviving twin has already had several bouts with pneumonia and asthma.

Respiratory ailment is one of the most common illnesses afflicting adults and children of the present generation. Luckily, modern medicine and equipment are available to treat these ailments more efficiently. My grandmother used to spend countless hours massaging my father’s back and helping him breathe properly whenever he has an asthma attack. Then the vaporizer was introduced to help ease breathing and eventually oral and inhaled medications were prescribed to treat asthma attacks.

Nowadays, a person with asthma or respiratory ailment can bring along an inhaler in his pocket in case of an asthma attack. There are also nebulizers in various sizes that can be stored at home and compact ones that you can bring along in your travels.

Breathing aides are also available for severe cases where breathing becomes constantly difficult. A medical gas cylinder or an oxygen tank that are usually found in the hospital may also be available for personal use. Compact and portable sized ones are available in the market along with cylinder cabinets for proper storage.

Proper care and maintenance for these apparatus should be exercised to make sure that the health of our family is not compromised. Nebulizer or oxygen masks, pipes or tubes as well as inhalers should be cleaned after use and sterilized regularly. If you have a sickly kid that requires particular care with the sterilization process you can get a small sterilization cabinet for home use. Small sterilizing machines that use gas cartridges for sterilization can sterilize and aerate your materials in a short period of time.

Modern day medicine and equipment can provide comfort and convenience for patients. But when it comes to our children, a mother’s care and perfect bedside manners will always ease the pain and discomfort of an ailing child just like in the olden days. Therefore, sleepless nights and a “no rest for the weary” attitude become constant for mothers with sickly children.
