Who is Sean Hull?

In two words, I’m a technology consultant. In more words, I’m a tech consultant, small business owner, author and speaker.

I grew up in upstate New York and I studied Computer Science. I’ve been working with Internet since its “dark ages” of the 1990s. I wrote quite a bit of code until I realized there were more than 10 types of people in this world and they mostly didn't speak binary. Since then it has become my role to help people understand how technology works to make their businesses more profitable.

What do I do?

This can be rather tricky to answer.

Many see me as the guy that “makes websites go”. Translated into more specific terms, I identify and troubleshoot the problems that hinder website performance, and I remove them so businesses can scale quickly. I help businesses raise the bar in their operations by instituting best practices and facilitating inter-departmental communication so that everyone’s working toward the same goal.

If that’s still too abstract, I suppose I could be described as a plumber, the guy that unclogs the pipes and flushes out the bad stuff so the website can run better and faster. I’m also the 9-1-1 tech guy. The emergency response dude you’d call on that, hopefully rare, occasion when something goes horribly wrong with your datacenter.

Ultimately, I think the most valuable I bring to any client is my ability to distill all the technical intricacies into a language they speak and offer the optimal solution to help their business grow.

When I’m online, what makes me click?

It’s my job to know how different technologies interact with each other. So any topic in the following areas tend to capture my attention:

  • datacenter evolution, virtualization, and commoditization
  • provisioning and  deployments using configuration management and automation tools such as Chef and Puppet
  • web scalability, performance in relation yo MySQL, Drupal, PHP, Apache, Memcache, and Varnish
  • open source technologies
  • high availability technologies
  • disruptive technologies, startup culture, and fast-paced environments

My geekiness extends to other areas such as brewing the perfect cup of joe, extreme fitness, and discovering how the mind works.
