I’ve seen canned escargo before–when I went to culinary school people would cook the escargo and stuff it in shells that had been used before–but the escargo posted here looks incredibly nasty.

I like grass jelly. Just sprinkle some granulated sugar on it and it’s pretty good (does not taste like your back yard).

WTF is huitlacoche? Some of those other things seem kinda gross, but in a familiar “Fear Factor” way. That stuff looks like Cthulu slobber.

Huitlacoche is a kind of mushroom, tipically from mexico, and the yellow things on it are corn,as a lot of things on these pics it looks as nasty cuz its canned, its actually pretty tasty.

Huitlacoche is corn smut, which is a disease of maize caused by the pathogenic plant fungus Ustilago maydis. It is usually eaten as a filling in quesadillas and other tortilla-based foods.

huitlacoche is a naturally occurring mold that happens on corn and is considered quite a delicacy by many Latin American cultures…meso Americans (think Mayas and Aztecs) are generally credited with having started cultivating this type of fungus as a foodstuff.

Huitlacoche is a fungus that grows on corn; it’s flavor is supposed to be very similar to truffles. It’a a delicacy south of the border. I’ll stick to mushrooms, thank you very much. I love the hot dog in a can!

How many millions of bones are in a rattle snake? I can only assume by the time you “remove bones” you might as well eat the cheeseburger in a can and forget about it.

And I’m sorry, but I didnt’ realize that fish had balls.

it’s called fishballs but it’s not actually a fish’s ‘ball.’ Think of it as meatballs. Are they the balls of an animal? it’s just sausaged meat. It’s the same for a fish ball, minced sausaged fish

It’s veritable smorgasbord of dubious culinary delights. I think it’s safe to say there are some things that should NEVER be canned. The canned Russian herring looks more like canned Russian sea monster. I have, however, had rattlesnake and Cajun gator – fried, not canned. Not bad, but then I’ve always had a taste for game.

thanks, people. Wikipedia mentioned some other things about the green stuff (a.k.a. corn smut). It is used to induce labor by Zunis, the name is derived from the native word for “raven’s excrement,” and that the USDA is trying to get us all to eat it.

What is the lard doing in this mess? It at least is not as useless as the other stuff. It makes the best biscuits and the flakiest pie crust. I could understand if you had a can of Crisco pictured ,that stuff is just nasty.

WTF? Did these people capture these images at Andrew Zimmern’s grocery mart? haha Wow, amazing stuff. I think the most disturbing was the canned whole chicken. I’ve seen the canned eel and the canned wild boar in Europe (Netherlands) before. I think Andrew Zimmern should do an all canned food themed Bizarre Foods.

The canned herring scared me, but the reindeer paté just made me laugh my ass off. I love the fact that they labeled it as being made from a relative of Rudolph, and that you can enjoy it at Christmas time.

What’s next? Bunny paté for easter?

The grass jelly’s not bad, but it’s not worth going out of one’s way to find. IMHO, of course. I’d like to find some of the canned huitlacoche: it’s supposed to taste like truffles, but I’ve never had enough of either to really detect any taste.

Chacun a son gout, and all that: some of the stuff looks slimy, which is why we find it so off-putting, but we eat a lot of things that other cultures find disgusting. Sometimes it’s just the name: call that liver spread pate and it sounds a lot better.

I may never eat brains again after seeing that cholesterol leve, though! And do Russian herring really have teeth like that? The ones I had in England looked like normal fish.
