Signs

It’s not that your average vinyl sign is evil. Mostly they’re just ugly. And expensive. And environmentally destructive.1 And ugly.

We make something different. Hand-painted, hand-lettered, original signs for homes & businesses. (And other related stuff.)

Why?

Because it’s fun.

Really?

Yes. In a soulful kind of way. There’s something freeing about having the tools of the trade fit into a shoebox. Whole rooms full of computers & cutting machines that cost thousands just don’t compare.

For businesses

Bare Root Studio offers the stamp of authenticity that builds trust in your brand. Nobody else is going to have a sign like yours. Take a look here to get the gist of our range.

We do not overcharge, either, especially not for small businesses, fellow artisans & nonprofits. Keeping our prices reasonable allows us to remain easily accessible, which is part of our core social responsibility

This also means happy little hand-painted signs can take over the visual landscape more quickly, another core value of ours.

Click here to contact us for a quote. We make it super easy for you, promise.

P.S. We ship commercial signs to other states, too.

For homes

Bare Root Studio presents an endlessly creative & affordable range of hand-painted signs, furniture & décor. Click here & here to get an idea.

Like the commercial signs, these pieces are not mass produced, interchangeable home “accents.” They are for the living, breathing home. Part of the culture of the home.

Made from exclusively recycled wood & paint, with the exception of lettering enamel. No stencils, no vinyl cutouts, of course.

We do a whole lot of custom work here. People really enjoy personalizing signs & we really enjoy doing that for them.

The Sign Painter

Johnny D

Johnny D has painted signs all over the country for the past thirty years. A stint in the Marine Corps led to art school in California, as these things will, which then led to an apprenticeship under a hard-drinking sign painter on the streets of a coastal village. In other words: your typical sign painter’s Cinderella story.

Ever since, through hell, high water & wild children getting into his paints (see here), Johnny D has continued to develop a time-honored trade into an art form.

1According to the EPA, vinyl chloride, the third most widely used plastic, is a carcinogen. Polyvinyl chloride plasticized with phthalates (PVC) not only causes indoor air pollution, but wreaks havoc on human endocrine systems, including reproductive abnormalities. Dioxin, a byproduct of the manufacture, is one of the most carcinogenic things on the planet. Groundwater & waterways get polluted with vinyl chloride. Oh, & it can’t be recycled, either.
