Have you ever wondered what it's like to work in radio?
Do you want to know what goes on behind the scenes?
Is it your dream to produce a radio show?
Our course gives you the opportunity to experience what it's like to work in radio. Whether you want to write scripts, research news, produce features, interview important and interesting people, or play music and chat with your listeners, it's all here in our intensive course.
The course runs for two weeks and provides Christians with a unique opportunity to learn broadcasting skills and gain practical experience. Christians working in the industry and with a wide range of radio broadcasting experience will teach you valuable skills and nurture and develop your creative abilities, enabling you to put together your own radio show and operate a local community radio station, Rothwell Carnival Radio, live on air 24 hours a day for a full week.
In week 1 you will gain an understanding of:
In week 2 the exciting stuff really begins! You will work in a team to operate a live local radio station, which will include:
... all to a very tight schedule.
Radio is a great way to get your voice heard! Many of us do not realise how powerful radio can be in sharing the gospel with people. Although some Christians have already taken advantage of this, other faith groups such as Muslims and Jehovah's Witnesses are far more involved in running stations. But as Christians, we sometimes fail to seize the opportunities we have right here on our doorstep.
In the UK, under the Restricted Service Licence scheme, groups can run their own radio station for up to 28 days in a year. With the right training, more Christians could become better communicators and let God's love be known through radio broadcasting.
Of course! It would be helpful if you had some media knowledge, but it's not required – you just need an interest in radio. Oh, and a lot of enthusiasm. Students of all ages and walks of life come from all over the world to take the course. Together as a team you will learn to support and help each other as the course progresses.
Our course is the only UK course that includes live radio transmission on an actual radio station.
We'll give you a grounding in radio programming principles. You'll learn more about yourself. You'll discover where your talents lie. You'll meet new people. And you'll have a lot of fun along the way.
The course runs every summer. The next one is for the two weeks 6-19 July, including live broadcasting on 12-18th.
It costs £550 per person (all inclusive - accommodation, meals and course materials. There are optional extra materials which will cost you more, but you don't have to buy them.)
A non-returnable deposit of £25 has to be sent with your application or soon afterwards, and full fees are due 2 weeks before the course starts.
Before taking the course, you may like to look at other websites with information on radio presenting and Christian media. Audiopot is a useful online library of Christian audio, with examples of audio which has been used in local radio. Radio Presenting offers hints & tips on presentation for music radio.
Before you come, you can prepare by listening to different radio stations: small local stations, national ones (like the BBC) and international shortwave ones like the World Service. There may also be a preliminary assignment to complete to bring with for when the course starts. Don't worry about it - it'll be an easy one and will give you a good head-start.
