RHoK Success Stories: PhillySNAP

Published by mbrennan

At RHoK Philadelphia in June of 2011, four participants came together and created something that served a real need. The problem was simple: individuals participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) had no way of easily locating farmers’ markets providing fresh and healthy food that accepted SNAP benefits.

The answer was clear: the team needed to build a database of the location of farmers’ markets in Philadelphia that accept SNAP benefits. Then they would allow individuals to text any address to a local phone number and receive an SMS response with the nearest farmers’ market, along with the hours it is open. The SMS-based approach would ensure a higher level of penetration than Internet access or smart phones. The focus on fresh farmers’ market food promotes healthy eating and supports local farmers and businesses. The result is PhillySNAP, using Voxeo’s SMSified platform.

The PhillySNAP team partnered up with the Food Trust, a Philadelphia organization dedicated to “ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food.” And just a few months later, PhillySNAP information began appearing on pamphlets and other information promoted by the organization. The Food Trust has printed and distributed thousands of these pamphlets at farmers' markets and corner stores around Philadelphia.

This project represents so much of what RHoK is all about: The collaboration of four motivated individuals (Danny Chang, Mark Headd, Katey Metzroth and Tim Wisniewski), partnership between local businesses and non-profits (Voxeo, the Food Trust), and actual community impact. And there is more to come! In addition to PhillySNAP being selected for an award by the Federal Communication Commission's "Apps for Communities Contest", the team is looking for ways to pair the project with other similar efforts around the country such as San Francisco's SNAP Fresh.

The winners of RHoK Atlanta recently had the opportunity to meet with their local City Council about Random Hacks of Kindness.  On January 17th, 2011, the Atlanta City Council issued a Proclamation on the occasion on behalf of the citizens of Atlanta, recognizing "Random Hacks of Kindness Atlanta for its commitment to 'real technology solutions for real people.'"

Atlanta's top two winning apps were identified and described in the City Council's Proclamation: a mobile phone app helping restaurants redistribute excess prepared food to nonprofits serving those in need and an app providing geolocated mobile phone alerts based on local crime data.

RHoK Atlanta in December 2011 was Atlanta's third RHoK event, with great local partnerships supporting RHoK on an ongoing basis, including local leads at the Georgia Tech Research Institutue and the Advanced Technology Development Center.

Team brainstorming with RHoK collaborators

We now have an answer to the question everyone has been asking: when is the next RHoK Global?

After two days of intensive meetings with the RHoK partners and some close collaborators, reviewing feedback from RHoK-ers all around the world, and plenty of brainstorming about where RHoK can go in 2012, we have your answer.

RHoK Global will take place twice in 2012, on June 2/3 and on December 1/2.  Start planning now, 2012 is going to be big!

Not only that, you are going to see a lot of exciting developments at RHoK in 2012:
  • RHoK is going to have a full-time community manager working to support you in building your local RHoK communities and events, following up on projects and showcasing all the work you are doing and the RHoK progress and success stories around the world.
  • In response to all your feedback, we have put some real time and thinking into how to make our website a strong and efficient tool that can work better for you, and we are going to do it fast so that you have a reliable platform for the next RHoK Global.  We will also be opening up participation in website development to the community this year.
  • Finally, we are building partnerships and developing connections around the world that can support and sustain projects coming out of RHoK, so all the great hacking you do and the prototypes and demos you build at RHoK have a clearer path to implementation, impact and making the world a better place.

We are really excited about this year.  And keep checking in here, because starting now you are going to see regular updates on the RHoK blog, beginning with stories of some of the most successful hacks to come out of RHoK so far.
