NDSU Running and Dancing to Championships
Most of us were captivated by the run to the national championship made by the North Dakota State football team this past fall and early winter. Certainly it’s been a banner year for NDSU Athletics. But did you know another national championship was won by NDSU that didn’t involve any type of ball?
The NDSU Dance Team won the national championship in the Division 1 pom category at the 2012 UDA Cheer & Dance National Championship at Walt Disney World just one week after the Bison defeated Sam Houston State in Frisco, TX.
I mention this now because I had the opportunity to welcome into the studio three talented members of the 18-member championship team: Hillary Ehlen, Kristen Oldyn and Emily Sumpmann. Talking about competing, I found them to be no less passionate, focused and intense than anyone who puts on a football jersey.
Far too often, the great skill and athleticism of dancers and cheerleaders gets overlooked or flat-out dismissed within a university community. It’s not until you watch these young ladies compete that you understand the hours of training required are just as extensive and rigorous as anyone competing on a field or court.
Today at the Ramada Inn there will be a reception from 2 to 4 pm to honor the team. If you’re out and about – or even if you’re not – stop on by and help recognize the wonderful accomplishment of the national championship North Dakota State Dance Team!

Wednesday Sneak Peek: What to do about Syria? For that matter, how to deal with Russia. Russia and China veto a Security Council resolution demanding al-Assad stop the violence against the opposition. Meanwhile, Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, said Moscow has been trying to work with Western countries, including the U.S,, to stop the killing in Syria. Toss in Israel’s latest thoughts on Iran, American troops in Afghanistan… we’re “this” close to the Middle East turning the entire world upside down. So what should the U.S. Big Picture position be?
